Intel Core i7-6700K Quad-Core Processor launched in Q3'15, brings Skylake architecture performance to desktop builds with a 4.0 GHz base clock and unlocked multiplier for enthusiasts.

This 6th generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor (i7-6700K) features four physical cores and eight threads thanks to Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology, delivering strong multi-threaded performance for content creation, gaming and productivity workloads.

The i7-6700K runs at a 4.0 GHz base frequency with Intel® Turbo Boost 2.0 raising clocks up to 4.2 GHz when thermal and power headroom allow. It uses 14 nm lithography, supports 64-bit operating modes and offers an 8 MB Smart Cache to accelerate frequently used data.

Built for LGA 1151 (Socket H4) motherboards, the CPU is compatible with Intel® B150, H110, H170, Z170, Q150 and Q170 chipsets and provides up to 16 PCI Express 3.0 lanes for discrete graphics and expansion cards. Note that the processor is sold as a tray package and does not include a cooler.

Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 530 supports up to three displays and 4K output (DisplayPort/eDP up to 4096x2304@60Hz, HDMI up to 4096x2304@24Hz), with a base GPU clock of 350 MHz and max dynamic frequency of 1150 MHz. The graphics block supports DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5 and video features such as Quick Sync Video and Clear Video HD.

Memory support includes dual-channel DDR4 and DDR3L with up to 64 GB total, various clock speeds (1600–2133 MHz typical), and memory bandwidth up to 34.1 GB/s. Power draw is specified at a 91 W TDP and the processor supports virtualization (VT-x, VT-d), AES-NI, Turbo Boost, SpeedStep and numerous Intel platform technologies.

Ideal use cases include high-frame-rate gaming (paired with a discrete GPU), video editing and encoding leveraging Quick Sync, software development and virtual machine workloads thanks to virtualization features, and general desktop performance for power users. Keep in mind the product status is discontinued, but it remains a capable option for legacy Skylake builds or upgrades to existing LGA 1151 systems.
