Buying Guide - Golf Clubs
The lowdown on golf club heads
Golf clubs sets can really vary in price so whether you’re a novice or an experienced golfer, it’s worth doing a bit of research to work out which golf clubs are right for you before making your sporting investment. There are different golf clubs for different parts of a golf course, so you’ll need to have a selection of woods, irons and wedges in your set, with a combination of shafts and club heads.
When you’re looking at what golf clubs to buy, you need to take into consideration a number of factors, so we’ve pulled together some key pointers to help you.
Irons
A traditional set of golf irons is made up of 3-9, PW, SW (9 irons), which will give you a good range of full shot varieties from 60 yards through to
200 yards depending on your ability. These days though, the average 18 handicap golfer only uses their irons around 25 times during a round. This is because there are so many alternative clubs available, like easy to hit drivers, rescue golf clubs and specialist wedges.So, it’s worth thinking about how many irons you actually really need to buy. You definitely need four – the 6, 7, 8 and 9 irons – but after that the decision is down to your preference. Instead of the 3, 4 and 5 irons, you might prefer to use rescue clubs, and instead of the standard PW and SW that you get in 9 iron golf clubs sets, you should consider whether you’d prefer specialist wedges. As a general guide, you should think about buying four or five irons through to PW, consider a rescue 3 or 4, plus a specialist sand wedge.
Irons are made from two types of steel:
- Cast/perimeter-weighted irons are more appropriate for golfers with a mid to high handicap. They have a cavity back construction with most of the weight on the outside of the club.
- Forged steel irons are more difficult to hit because of the softer metal. They’re best for mid to low handicap golfers as they offer more control.
Woods
Woods come into play when you’re over 175 yards from the green and are generally made of titanium (which is lighter) or stainless steel (a classic looking club, less expensive but heavier than titanium).
Drivers and woods are either standard, which enable better control and have a smaller sweet spot, midsized which weigh less than an oversized club and have a larger sweet spot than a standard club, or oversized, which have the largest sweet spot but not as much control as the standard and midsized clubs.
Wedges
These clubs create lift and are good when specific shots need to be played. The Pitching Wedge is suitable for shots from the fairway into the green, whilst the Lob Wedge is for short shots around the green. The Gap Wedge fills in between the Pitching and Lob Wedge. Then there’s the Sand Wedge which, you’ve guessed it, is for digging balls out of bunkers.
Choosing golf club sets based on your handicap
Steel shafts are stronger, more durable and are usually less expensive than graphite. They give more shot control, but
they do need more swing speed to get the same result as graphite, so they’re more suitable for stronger players the want more control.Graphite shafts are lighter, so they allow more swing and are better shock absorbers. The downsides are that they’re more costly, less durable and you won’t get the same amount of control with graphite.
The Shaft flex (bend) has a major effect on the feel of a golf club and a medium effect on the distance. It needs to match your swing, so if you don’t know your speed swing, some golf shops can measure it for you.
If you’re a beginner or have a less powerful swing, then a flexible shaft flex will work best for you. Choose a regular shaft flex if you’re an average player with a swing speed of 75 to 90 mph. If you’re a strong player with a 90 to 110 mph range, then a stiff/firm shaft flex will be best suited to you.
