The first choice you are faced with is whether you want to buy a washing machine or a washer dryer. If you are short on space then a washer dryer is ideal, but they are usually more expensive to buy than the two machines separately. A washer dryer is perfect for a smaller household where you won’t require a full-sized tumble dryer for the amount of laundry you have. If you are in a large household, then two separate machines might be the best option so you can wash and dry at the same time, as well as make use of a full-sized dryer machine.When looking for a washing machine, you need to find one to suit your needs that is within your budget. If you live on your own and don’t have a lot of washing to do very often then a budget model, with simple specifications, should meet your needs. The cheapest washing machines start are about £200 or less and there are a huge number of manufacturers to choose from.
Bosch is one of the best-selling washing machine manufacturers and a Bosch washing machine could cost you anything from £160 up to £900. You can find a Bosch washing machine in a range of price brackets and, whether you want a bargain model or one of the best models around, they are a manufacturer worth considering.
The average washing machine is priced around £300 to £350 and you can find a good spec Hotpoint washing machine in this range with most of their models priced in the lower and mid-price bracket. A washer dryer can cost you around an extra £50 to £100 more and Bosch offers a good range of washer dryers.

Wash programmesIn order to find a washing machine that is best suited to your needs, it is important to find out the wash programme features it comes with. The higher-end models will come with more wash options, but the basic wash programmes are cottons, synthetics, delicates and woollens. If you have a lot of delicate fabrics like fine wools or silks, then you should look for a machine that offers a hand wash programme to ensure your materials are protected when being washed.
Another handy feature is a short or quick wash programme which is perfect if your clothes are only slightly dirty and you need them washed in a hurry. Other good options to look out for are economy settings and variable temperature control which gives you more versatility to find the perfect wash for your clothes.
Spin speeds
Your washing machine will normally select which spin speed to use based on which programme you have chosen for your washing. Some, however, have a variable spin speed setting which lets you choose your desired speed, but this is only worth bothering with if you have a good knowledge in the area. If you don’t, it is best to leave it up to the machine. Most washers come with at least two speeds – the higher speed of 1100 rpm or more, which is perfect for washing cottons, and a low speed of 400 – 800 rpm which is better suited to washing delicate materials.
Some more expensive models will offer extra spin options that are tailored for individual materials. For instance, some will have a longer spin cycle for cottons – which is better for extracting water – and some will provide an interval spin to reduce creasing in synthetic clothes.
