Buying Guide - Integrated dishwashers

Overview

There are many different types of integrated dishwashers. Firstly there is the option of a fully integrated dishwasher. These are entirely hidden by a furniture panel, and are entirely inconspicuous. These tend to be operated with a control panel on the top edge face of the dishwasher, which you can access when you open it. This way the control panel remains invisible when the dishwasher is shut.

You can also get a semi integrated dishwasher, which as we’re sure you’ve guessed, means the dishwasher is only partly hidden. Most of the dishwasher tends to be tucked behind a furniture panel, but the control panel is accessible without having to open the dishwasher, which makes for easy operation. Although the control panel is visible, it does not mean the look of the kitchen is automatically compromised; many of the control panels are stylish and well designed. Manufacturers Miele even offer the fascia control panel in a variety of colours, and design the dishwashers to visually coordinate with other Miele devices in your kitchen.

Finally, an in-column integrated dishwasher is one which is built into the kitchen at chest height. This makes for extremely easy access, and might be the best option if you do not want to bend down to put your crockery in.

Basic needs

When purchasing an integrated dishwasher you need to make many of the same considerations as when buying a free-standing one. The size of the dishwasher is important. An integrated dishwasher can be large or small, and can be made to fit into most places in a kitchen, provided there is access to a water supply and power point, and there is room for a waste pipe. Dishwasher size is measured in place settings. Most standard dishwashers fit between 12 and 14 place settings, although smaller ones take as little as six. A fully integrated dishwasher is typically a little smaller than a free-standing one, but still takes on average the same quantity of place settings.

Other basic aspects to consider include the types of wash available, and the noise level of the integrated dishwasher. Most dishwashers offer a quick wash option, as well as three normal types of wash – intensive, standard and economy. The difference between these is the temperature of the water which the dishwasher operates with. You choose which programme you want based on how soiled the dishes are. Noise levels, meanwhile, are down to personal preference. Generally an integrated dishwasher which operates under 50dB is considered quiet, whilst one over 55dB is often deemed noisy.

Eco options

Considering the eco options on your integrated dishwasher is important, not just for the environment, but also because it can save you money. Most dishwashers have an eco-cycle option which you can use. Although it takes longer than a normal wash, it uses about two litres less water. If you are billed for your water via water meter, then an integrated dishwasher which features this setting would be an advantage. Read individual dishwasher technical specifications to see the exact amount of water used per typical cycle. Eco-cycles also use less energy by running the wash at a lower temperature, which will save you money off of your power bills. Furthermore, some dishwashers have a timer option, which allows you to run them during late night periods when electricity tariffs are low.

Each dishwasher has an energy efficiency grading rating from A-G, monitored by Trading Standards. An integrated dishwasher classified with an A rating is the most efficient, while one with a G rating is the worst. Some dishwashers also offer half-load settings, if you only have a few dishes to wash. Although this saves money, most experts recommend waiting until the load is full before washing, because the half-load setting saves you less than half the money of a full wash.

Top features

Many of the high-end integrated dishwashers have various features which separate them out from the rest of the pack. The following are all options which we think might be particularly useful.

If you have children it would be wise to invest in a dishwasher which has a child lock option, as the combination of extremely hot water, chemical detergents and children generally tends not to be a favourable one. Disaster can also be averted by an integrated dishwasher with anti-flood settings. These dishwashers have mechanisms which detect whether water is being retained in the machine, and if it is, they curtail the flow of water.

Other important features include a heat drying function, which washes dishes in very hot water for the final rinse, which means when you take them out of the machine they will be dry. One advantage a semi integrated dishwasher has over a fully integrated dishwasher is the ability to host a time remaining feature, which while not essential, is just a useful piece of information. Adjustable racks are another useful function. These allow you to configure the internal space inside the dishwasher to accommodate large saucepans and cooking pots, if you have been using them. A 3-in-1 function means you can use special dishwasher tablets which feature salt and rinse aid, which help clean dishes more thoroughly. If you use a 3-in-1 tablet in a dishwasher without 3-in-1 functionality, you may invalidate your warranty.

The brands

Integrated dishwasher reviews have highlighted a few key players in the dishwasher market. A Miele or Bosch integrated dishwasher is normally a safe bet, as they are widely thought to be reliable machines. Check product reviews of the model number you are interesting in buying before purchasing though. A Bosch integrated dishwasher which scores particularly well is the SMV69T10GB, featuring a very efficient eco-cycle option and is sized at 14 place settings. The machine features sensors which judge how dirty the dishes are, and adjusts the wash cycle to the appropriate strength to ensure the crockery comes out clean while the machine operates as efficiently as possible. Another Bosch integrated dishwasher which scores well is the SMV53M00.

The Neff S5943X2 is a slim-line fully integrated dishwasher which has scored well in integrated dishwasher reviews. The nine place setting machine boasts an efficient energy wash, and leaves very few watermarks on dishes. However, the normal option uses over 16 litres of water, which is inefficient. Perhaps consider another Bosch integrated dishwasher, the slim-line SRV43M03GB, which also holds nine place settings. This features a very simple control panel and a top shelf which you can adjust even when it is fully loaded.
