Buying Guide - Showers

Size of bathroom

If you’re one of those people who needs a good shower to get the day started, then it’s worth investing in a shower that’s going to do the job well, as a little trickle of luke warm water will only be frustrating! There are a number of things to take into consideration when choosing what type of shower to go for.

Think about the size of your bathroom. If it’s small, install a powerful shower over your bath with a clear glass screen as this will give the illusion of more space.

If you’ve got a bigger bathroom, you could consider a wetroom style shower, which can drain directly on to the floor or into a large, low shower tray.

Water pressure

Check your water pressure and what sort of hot water supply you have. Combination boilers offer the highest water pressure and work well with mixer showers where the hot and cold water supplies have to be at equal pressure.

If your home has a low pressure gravity fed water system where the hot water tank is in the airing cupboard and the cold water comes from a tank in the loft, you will be able to have a reasonably powerful shower. This is as long as there’s at least a one metre drop from the bottom of the cold water storage tank to the top of the shower head. If there isn’t, you could raise the cold water tank by putting it on a platform, or you could add a pump to boost the water pressure. The other alternative is that you could install a power shower with an inbuilt pump.

Different shower types

Mixer showers are shower head

ideal for homes with high-pressure systems. They take water from the hot and cold water supplies and mix them to reach the desired temperature.

Thermostatic mixer showers are a safe option for young children and the elderly as the inbuilt thermostat ensures that water temperature is constant. They’re also good for bigger families as the water temperature won’t be affected by water being used in other parts of the house.

Shower towers provide directional jets, rather than just one fixed head, which smooth and clean the whole body. Be aware though that they require fairly high pressure to perform well.

Power showers are ideal for homes with low water pressure. They take water from the hot and low pressure stored cold water supplies and mixes them together to reach the ideal temperature and then boost water flow rate with an electric pump. They’re easy to operate and give greater control over the water pressure and temperature than with a mixer shower, but they are less energy efficient and more costly to run.

Electric showers are suitable for any domestic water system and take water from the mains cold water supply, heating up only the amount used each time, which makes them very economical.
