Buying Guide - Hair Straighteners

The right hair straighteners for you

Hair straighteners have revolutionised hairstyling at home and are amazing at creating a stylish look that you could only ever get at the salon.

There are loads of hair straighteners available today, so it can be difficult to know which one to go for. They don’t all

give the same results, so we’ve pulled together some tips of what you need to look out for when you’re choosing straighteners.

Hair straighteners can vary in price, you can even pick up a pair from just £7.49 for BaByliss Travel Hair Straighteners. So think about how much you want to spend as this will determine which brand of straighteners you can go for.

The general rule of thumb is that the more you spend the better quality product, as they heat up faster, some within 10 seconds, which means they use less electricity. They reach a higher temperature (look for at least 170⁰C, but ideally you should go for 210⁰C) and they can maintain this heat whilst you’re using them. This even heat distribution means that you’ll get a much better result.

Ceramic and tourmaline plates will give you the best results as they use special advanced ceramic heaters. They’re kinder to your hair and will glide through it due to their microscopically smoother surface, without the risk of tearing and pulling it. They’re also static-free which means your hair stays where it should after each section has been straightened.

Choosing the right plate size for your hair type is important. Smaller plate straighteners work better for straightening and curling. They’re also ideal for very short, medium length and thinner hair, but this size is also practical for those who want a versatile hair straightener. Wider plates are ideal if you’ve got thick hair or if you’ve got lots of it.

If you’re male or have extremely short hair, then go for mini styler hair straighteners, as they have much smaller plates.

If you need hair straighteners that will work fast, then consider those that you can use on wet hair –this means that you won’t have to dry your hair first.

You can now even get hair straighteners with a steam function, where you add water to get a puff of steam from time to time as you work on your hair. This won’t be the best option for people with extremely curly hair or hair that tends to frizz under humid conditions. The steam option works best for people whose hair is already fairly straight.

Getting the best results from your hair straighteners

Straighten your hair when it’s clean and dry (unless your straighteners are designed to be used on wet hair). This will ensure that the ions released by the ceramic hair straightener will stick to the hair, thus giving you a longer lasting result.

Using a good quality shampoo, a deep conditioning conditioner and iron oil will give you much better results and will help to protect your hair, especially if you straighten your hair every day. Use a heat protecting shampoo as it will protect your hair when you’re straightening it.

Before using your straighteners, apply a shine serum to your hair and a thermal protection spray all over your.

Try not to go over the same section of hair more than once, as the more you go over it, the more damage you could cause.

Despite their name, hair straighteners can actually be used for curling your hair. To do this, simply part your hair down the middle, then part each section again so you have four sections of hair. Pin three of the sections out of the way on your head. Taking the remaining section of hair, take a small part of it and heat it up with your straightener, once you’ve done this, take your finger and lightly wrap the piece of hair around it and immediately unwrap it. Carry on with this process throughout your whole hair and you’ll end up with gorgeous curls.

Another way to curl your hair using your straighteners is to place the irons vertical to your head, as close to your scalp as possible (make sure you’re careful not to touch your scalp with them though). Rotate the iron 180 degrees away from your head and pull towards you in one small smooth movement. The slower the action the tighter your curl will be, whilst if want a looser curl look, then your action should be faster. If you’re not happy with the curl first time round don’t try to redo it straight away. Let your hair cool down first and then try again.

If you want a flirty, bouncy flick at the end of your straight hair, simply turn the straightener upwards as you get to the end of your hair.

Never leave straighteners where toddlers or young children can get them. As soon as you’ve finished with them, switch them off and unplug them. They can stay hot for quite a while after you’ve turned them off, so keep them out of reach.

Cleaning your hair straighteners

If your hair straighteners have a build up of hair products and oils on them, this could cause uneven heating and Coloured hair straighteners

incomplete straightening. Severe build up can even damage hair and cause split ends. To clean them, then just follow our simple steps:

- Heat your hair straighteners a little, or heat them and leave them to cool. They should be warm, but not too hot to touch. Unplug them.

- Dampen a small face towel with warm water. Using one finger, gently rub one plate at a time where the grime has built up. Avoid harsh scrubbing so the plates don’t get scratched.

- Wipe the plates until there’s no more build up on them. Reach down to the bottom of each plate. Use a cotton wool bud if you can’t get the towel into the corners.

- Clean down the sides and edges.

- Leave the straighteners to dry thoroughly before using them. If you need to use them immediately, dry them thoroughly with a dry towel.
