Buying tips
It’s always best to try a foundation before you buy, so visit a make up counter and ask the cosmetics assistant for some advice, they will usually try a few different foundations on your face so that you can see which shade and texture you
prefer. Try not to wear foundation when you go out to buy foundation as it will be much too confusing to determine your natural colouring. If you don’t want to put foundation on your face in the shop, you can always request some samples to take home and try on your skin before you buy the product.One mistake people often make when buying foundation is to try and match the colour on the back of their hand. This method doesn’t guarantee the best results as the skin on our hands is often not the same colour as that on our faces. Also remember to buy a new foundation for every season - your skin changes shade and texture from winter to summer.
Types of foundation
Cream/Crème foundation
These usually provide the most coverage and help you create a flawless look – great for evenings. However cream foundation can have a tendency to look quite heavy and false so be careful wearing this type of foundation in the day time. People with normal to dry skin sometimes choose cream foundation, as it can moisturize skin.
Compact foundation
Compact foundations combine liquid foundation and powder in one product. These are ideal for women on-the-go, especially if you like to apply your makeup last minute on the train or in the car when stuck in traffic! Compact foundations
provide good coverage similar to liquid foundation and feel like powder when they dry. You can determine the amount of coverage you want from a compact foundation, by using a sponge to apply more or less. The downside is that they often aren’t very good for people with dry skin as they can look flaky.Liquid foundation
Liquid foundation can give you light to medium coverage, depending on the formula and brand. Foundation users usually choose liquid foundation because it provides a natural look and feel and still provides some coverage of flaws and imperfections. There are lots of different formulas available on the market for different skin tones, from oil free to mineral makeup which is good for troublesome skin as it’s pure and won’t irritate the skin.
Illuminating foundation
Illuminating foundations provide a ‘natural glow’ and often contain crushed pearl or other minerals to give skin a subtle shimmer.
Primer
Primers are colourless and can be applied under foundation or worn alone to even out the skin tone. They help to minimize the appearance of pores, and provide a smooth complexion. Primers went out of fashion for a while but are now making a comeback.
Tinted moisturiser
Tinted moisturisers offer very light coverage, they are great if you have a very even skin tone or for use on holiday in hot countries as the texture is light on the skin. Many teens or people with great skin choose to use tinted moisturisers as they have great moisturising properties which can help protect against drying and they often come with SPF protection.
