One of the first considerations, especially if you are buying your home cinema system separately, is which receiver you need. The Yamaha AV receivers are some of the best available and their choice of receivers really make Yamaha stand out. How many speakers you want in your home cinema system will dictate which model of receiver you need. If you want the standard 3.1 or 5.1 speaker systems then nearly every receiver will be able to handle this. But, if you want a bigger speaker system – or want the option of adding more speakers to your system – then look at receivers with bigger capabilities. Some Yamaha AV receivers offer 11.2 channel operation – which means it can handle eleven speakers and two sub-woofers.

If you want the best sound quality too, look for receivers with CINEMA DSP technology. The newest range of Yamaha receivers – the RX-Vx71 series – uses this technology and it can provide you with real cinematic sounds straight into your living room. These are the pricier Yamaha models but you can be assured of one of the best sounds possible. They offer HD audio compatibility and some receivers can also play 3D images, too. If you want to play music through your home cinema system then consider a receiver with a Compressed Music Enhancer function. When you connect your MP3 to the system it restores lost details from your files and boosts the quality of your music. You can also download a Yamaha app which lets you control your Yamaha home cinema system straight from your phone.

Speakers

Yamaha have a great choice of home cinema speakers, too. You can buy the speakers in a system, or if you want more choice, buy them separately. If you buy speakers for your home cinema system separately though you need to be sure they are compatible with your receiver. As a guide you should choose speakers with half the power and same resistance as your receiver’s capabilities.

Generally the more speakers you have the more realistic surround sound experience you will create. 2.1 home cinema systems consist of two front speakers and a sub-woofer and this is the basic set-up. If you have a small room or want surround sound in your bedroom then these are the ideal choice. The next step up is a home cinema 5.1 – which is considered true surround sound with a sub-woofer, three front speakers and two rear speakers positioned around your room. If you are a serious enthusiast then you can go even higher with 7.1 and 9.1 speakers systems but you would need a large room to fit the speakers in. If you have a receiver capable of handling more speakers then you always have the option of adding speakers, too. Yamaha have a range of stand-up speakers, sub-woofers and speaker packages. If you are pushed for space in your room, but want the extra speakers, they also have smaller bookshelf speakers and in-wall or in-ceiling speakers – which will also modernise your room.

If you have an HD television it could be worth investing in a blu ray player too which would provide HD images to go with your surround sound providing you with a true cinema experience in the comfort of your own home.
