Buying Guide - HD Camcorders

Written by Pure Content

Types

Whether you are merely looking for a handy device with which to record some casual video shots or you are a professional broadcast producer, you will need to locate a HD camcorder that will meet your desire and budget.  The various types of camcorders are explained below.

Pocket camcorders: These are the least expensive and most convenient camcorders available.  You can carry one in your pocket, bag, or purse and shoot videos when the need arises.  You can later connect it to a PC and upload the video for editing use.  For as little as £50, you can walk away with an HD camcorder that you can carry in your pocket.

In-betweens: If you are looking for something that is neither too big nor too small, an in-between model will likely suit you.  These models are more similar to the full-size camcorders in features than their pocket-sized counterparts.  With a high optical zoom, large storage capacities, larger LCDs, and a full complement of USB ports, they resemble the larger camcorders.  However, with their lightweight and compact, pistol-grip forms, they are more like pocket camcorders.  These camcorders are offered at a comparative lower price than full-size ones.

Full-size consumer camcorders: By far, these are the largest camcorders available on the market today.  For professional video producers, these are the cameras to consider, providing a wide range of HD features.  These cameras are very powerful and will drain your pocket considerably.  However, their price is worth it if you have a professional need for recording HD or you are serious about your filming.

Features and Functions

HD camcorders come with various features that vary depending on the type of device.  For instance, full-size camcorders have more profound features than pocket camcorders.  The more features that come with the camera, the more expensive the device will be.  Basic features that one should look at before buying a camera include the lens, sensor, LCD, and its storage capacity.

Lens: The quality of the lens is determined by its optical zoom and the digital zoom.  For clear and crisp videos, you should go for a camcorder with nothing less than a 10x optimal zoom.  Remember the digital zoom is meant to enlarge the images by making the pixels larger for a softer video.  Image quality matters, so budget adequately for camcorders with higher optimal zoom ratio and megapixels.

Sensor: HD camcorders use CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors in place of the traditional CCD (charged-coupled device).  The sensor converts the images to digital information and its size and makeup determine the quality of the video.  Consider the size and pixel elements of the sensor before purchase.

LCD: The touch-screen LCDs are for viewing and controlling the video.  Pocket camcorders have smaller displays and instead of a touch screen, they have buttons.  If you want a larger display, go for full-size camcorders.

Storage features:  HD camcorders have either tape or tapeless storage system.  Tapeless storage is the most common and being digital; it makes access to individual clips instant.  They include hard drives, flash memory chips, removable memory cards, and MiniDVD discs.

Special Features

HD camcorders have other additional features that, according to the numerous HD camcorder reviews on the web, enhance their efficiency.  For camcorders with these special features, their prices are usually higher but the video quality is also enhanced.  The features include:

Image stabilization: This feature helps to reduce the shake effect caused by jittery filmmakers during shooting.  Most Panasonic HD camcorders have this technology but only in full-size camcorders.

Media transfer: With full-size camcorders, you can transfer your video files through a mini-USB port.  On the other hand, you will have to use USB jacks to transfer videos in the case of pocket camcorders.  When you want to transfer video files from your camcorder, you only need to push the button and the connector comes out.

Inputs and outputs: Besides a USB port, other ports can be used to transfer audio and video files in HD camcorders.  The mini-HDMI ports in a full-size camcorder can be used to connect the gadget to a HD receiver of HDTV.  If you would like to transfer analogue videos, check whether the camcorder has an AV-out port.  Other common ports that are usually found in HD camcorders include microphone and headphone ports.

Manual control: Though HD camcorders are usually operated as point-and-shoot gadgets, there are times when you can manually control them, especially when adjusting and managing focus.  Pocket camcorders are completely automatic but full-size camcorders allow for manual control.  The more expensive the full-size camcorder you choose, the greater manual control you will get.

Shopping Tips

If you are prepared to buy an HD camcorder, make sure you look for the right one.  To ascertain that what you are buying is the real deal, here are some tips to help you:

If possible, check the LCD screen in daylight: Some screens wash out if exposed to bright light and as such will not allow you to easily see what you are recording.

Consider the lens' optical zoom ratio rather than digital zoom ratio: Many people consider the digital zoom instead but this only enlarges the image.
The optical zoom is more important because it makes the video clear.  You will need at least 10x optical zoom for a clearer view.

Try out the camcorder's controls before buying: Small camcorders may be hard to use especially by people with large hands.  Larger models may be more comfortable for you instead.  Do not buy a camcorder without verifying that you can easily and comfortably use it.

Look out for special features: All HD camcorders offer a completely automatic mode but there are some that allow for manual mode, especially for exposure controls.  These could be more expensive but highly efficient.

Prepare your PC for AVCHD: The moment you buy the HD camcorder, you will somehow have to use it with your PC.  Therefore, ensure that your computer is suitable before buying the device.  Update your video-editing software in preparation as well.

Accessories

If you really value your camcorder, there are a number of accessories that you need to invest in to maintain your device and improve the video quality.  To begin with, you can buy a tripod for the sake of quality and focussed video shooting.  Most people cannot avoid shaking their hands at least a small amount when holding a camcorder.  This means there will be a shaky-effect on the eventual video.  If your device does not have image stabilisation technology, a tripod can replace this function.

Lenses are very delicate and need to be looked after with a lot of care.  A camcorder case is instrumental in keeping the lenses safe and reducing their chances of breaking.

Extra lenses can also be useful to you.  There are kit lenses that may be bundled together with the camcorders for general use.  Others that have wide apertures may not zoom but capture much more light thus improving the image clarity.

Meta: HD camcorders allow you to film your own high definition movies. Before buying an HD camcorder, ensure that you investigate the pros and cons of a number of models before making your final decision.
