Buying Guide - Lexmark Printers

Making a choice

Lexmark have a huge selection of printers to choose from and finding the right one can be tricky and time consuming. Lexmark UK offer all-in-one inkjets, colour laser printers, monochrome laser printers, multifunction colour laser and multifunction monochrome laser printers to choose from. They also have a range of specialist printers in their home office and professional series of printers.

The main consideration when finding the best Lexmark printer for you is what your printing requirements are. If you mainly need a printer for text documents then a laser printer offers the best quality of text. These types of printers are also ideal if you have a heavy printing workload and can print pages faster than inkjet printers as well as provide a lower page cost per print which is worth bearing in mind.

However, your budget will have a huge say on your final choice and, if you are looking for a budget machine, then inkjets are the most affordable option and are popular among students. That’s because they can also print colour photos and do a great job as an occasional printer for light workloads.

If you require a machine that can handle a large volume of regular printing – including colour documents – then colour laser printers are a good choice. They can’t print photos to as good a standard as an inkjet but provide better quality text and graphics. So if you need printing to meet tight deadlines, or maybe share your printer with more people, then this could be an ideal choice – however colour laser printers can be expensive.

Ink Jet printers

Because Lexmark inkjet printers are the most affordable models they are one of the best-selling. The best feature of an inkjet printer is the photo quality it produces. Another plus point with an inkjet is that it can print on a whole host of material and many inkjets can print on iron-on transfer, wide-format papers and specially designed canvas.

However, an inkjet printer is not the best option if you need to handle a lot of print-outs and need them quickly. If you are looking for a serious home office model then you will have to look at the high-end inkjet printers and the Lexmark S305-605 offer an excellent array of features. The high-end models in this series have touchscreens and also offer two-sided printing.

You can also find models with wireless connectivity which is a great choice if you want to reduce the clutter on your office desk. Some models also come with extended guarantees and if you are spending a lot of money on a printer then it is worth looking for three-year guarantees to cover you if it breaks down.

Although inkjet models are generally the lowest priced the replacement of ink cartridges can be expensive and it is worth carefully considering this before buying. Generally, lower-end inkjets could use tricolour cartridges – which have cyan, magenta and yellow – in the one cartridge. These are the least efficient cartridges – because once one colour runs out you have to replace all of them – so you will need to buy Lexmark ink cartridges more often.

It is better to look for models which offer separate cartridges for each ink so it is worth doing a bit of background research into the type of Lexmark ink needed and the replacement costs before you buy.

Other printing models

Multifunction printers
All-in-one devices allow you to combine your printer with a scanner, copier and some models offer fax capabilities, too. These are great for a home office and will save space with all the devices combined in one. Modern all-in-ones don’t compromise quality for combination but if you want specific features from your devices then you may not be able to find a multifunction printer to meet all of your needs.

If you want your Lexmark printer to do more than just print, then these are for you. You can find affordable inkjet all-in-ones but if you have a bigger budget then you can consider colour laser all-in-ones. If you have a high volume of scanning to do or if you have more than one person using the all-in-one machine then it might be a better choice to buy a separate scanner.

Colour or monochrome?

Monochrome printers are the cheaper model and are the choice for you if all you need to print is plain text, spread sheets and plain documents. They can also handle minimal graphics and offer a great balance between price, quality and speed of printing. Monochrome printers are also the cheapest Lexmark ink cartridges to refill so this is another great incentive.

If you need a high performance printer for colour heavy documents – such as brochures – then a colour laser printer is the best choice. For home use they may be out of your price range and are more popular in business offices with the cheaper inkjet the colour printer choice for home users. But, if you need excellent quality colour prints, with impressive speed and in heavy volumes then a colour laser printer are worth the investment. However, they are only cost effective if you regularly use your printer.

Software

Lexmark printer drivers are pieces of software that need to be installed on your computer and they convert data so it can be printed. Lexmark printers come with this software, usually on a CD, and you can get Lexmark drivers for any computer – such as MAC or PC. Different Lexmark models need specific Lexmark drivers and, if you delete your application or lose the CD for example, then you can download the software from their website. You can also download new and updated Lexmark drivers too.
