Buying Guide - Inkjet Printers

Overview

To start with let’s look at what an inkjet printer is. An inkjet printer is a printer that creates a digital picture by firing droplets of ink onto the page being printed. They are the most common type of today’s printers.

Some of the advantages of inkjet printers are:

• They are quieter than other types like the impact dot matrix or daisywheel printers. They are able to print smoother, finer details with higher printhead resolution. There are many inkjet printers available with photo-quality printing.

• Inkjets also have a lower cost per-page than dye sublimation and thermal wax types.They also have practically no warm-up time which is great when printing in a hurry.

• On the other side of the coin, one of the disadvantages of the inkjet printer is that the ink can be expensive, though 3rd party ink suppliers do sell cartridges at discount prices.

Inkjet printers are usually more for home use, or if photos are being printed, whereas laser printers are more suited to offices where printing volume is high. Inkjet printers are initially cheaper than laser printers, but because their ink cartridges are more expensive and don’t last as long, it can usually mean that the ink cost per page is higher than that of a laser printer for printing in black and white. When it comes to colour printing, inkjet tends to be more cost-effective because colour laser printers are more expensive to buy.

When buying an inkjet printer, you can’t go far wrong with the most famous brands such as Hewlett-Packard, Epson, Lexmark, Advent, Kodak, Canon or Brother, but it can prove beneficial if you can find cheaper ink cartridges, made by a third party which are still good quality.

Printer Types

Moving on now and looking at the wireless printer and wireless inkjet printers. A wireless printer can be used with no connection to a computer, so it has the advantage that you can move it around without worrying about wires reaching or having to put it next to the computer, ideal if you are used to the freedom of working with a laptop. The wireless printer can also be set up as a network so several people can use it at once. It is also even possible to get a wireless printer with internet access on it so you don’t need a PC at all.

There are many affordable Multifunction Inkjet wireless printers ideal for home use, such as the Advent AWP10, the HP Deskjet 3050, the Canon Pixma MP499 and the Lexmark Intuition SE S508.

For more frequent printing and offices, it might be better to go for a wireless laser printer. Most wireless laser printers can print around 35 to 40 pages per minute. Hewlett-Packard are probably the biggest makers of wireless laser printers, with Dell also making many models. The best wireless printers have 802.11 b/g/n networks, which give optimal communication and connection. Many manufacturers will have test pages so you can see the quality of the wireless printer’s performance before you buy.

Laser printers use toner refills rather than ink cartridges. The laser printer uses a fuser to melt the toner to the page, so pages usually come out warm. Most toner refills come in black as colour laser printers are a lot more expensive than black-and-white.
