Making a choice

With such a wide range of printers available finding the right one for you can be tricky and time consuming. Canon printers are divided into inkjet printers, laser printers – which further breakdown into monochrome and colour – inkjet all-in-ones and photo printers.

The main consideration in finding the best printer for you is what your printing requirements are. But your budget will play a big part in your choice too and printers can cost a fair whack. If you mostly use printers for text documents then a laser printer will give you the best quality line art. Laser printers can also print pages faster than inkjets and each page costs lower to print. However, inkjets are much more affordable and are popular with students. These can print colour photos and, if speed and text quality aren’t a major factor, then inkjets are perfect. They do a job and are a great printer if you just want to do a few basic tasks or you are an occasional printer.

If you do a high volume of printing, and need colour documents, then colour laser printers are a good choice. They aren’t as good as inkjets at printing photos but handle text and graphics better. So if you often work to a deadline or share your printer with other people this is ideal although colour laser printers are expensive, though.

Inkjet printers

There are a range of Canon inkjet printer models and they are a great option for students and home users. The PIXMA iP2700 and iP3600 are great choices for Canon printers with excellent specifications that would fit well in the home and are affordable. If you want a printer for a home office and need a serious model to constantly print pages then you might want to consider more advanced models. Added features such as larger displays or touchscreens may be worth investing in if you will be regularly using the machine.

Canon has a good choice of business-focused inkjets too with more memory, higher capacities and more paper trays. If you use your printer for business then extra paper trays are handy so you can leave your printer to run and print without it constantly running out of paper. The PIXMA Ip4820 is a printer with a little bit more and delivers very good print quality with two, 150-sheet input trays and excellent printing speed. Another consideration worth taking into account when buying a printer is the maximum print resolution. A printer with a higher resolution level will give you finer detail and this is important if you are printing images. A major consideration with inkjet printers is the cartridge replacement costs. While you can pick up a Canon inkjet printer for an affordable price the cost of replacing Canon printer ink can be costly if you are a regular printer and costs quickly add up over time. The price and capacity of Canon printer cartridges will impact on how much you pay in the long-term and another consideration is how many pages each cartridge can print. Usually, the cheaper the cartridge the less ink it holds and you should check out the yield of replacement cartridges – they range from 300 to 1000 pages.

Laser printers

Monochrome printers offer a great balance between price, quality and speed. If you print a lot of text documents then you might want to consider a Canon laser printer instead of an inkjet. This is because you can pick up a basic monochrome laser printer for a similar price as an inkjet. They are generally faster too and can produce better quality text printing. But, they are also more affordable in the long run because laser toner cartridges are cheaper than inkjet cartridges.

An important consideration in laser printers is the text print speed. That is how many pages of full text a printer can output and home-based models range from 12-30 pages per minute. The Canon i-SENSYS LBP6000B is the entry-level Canon monochrome laser model and comes with 188ppm capabilities. It also has quick recovery from sleep mode and has a first print out time of 7.8 seconds – which is handy. It’s also compact so can neatly fit on a home office table.

If you need a high performance printer that can print colour graphics – in colour brochures or photographs – then a colour laser printer is an option. For home use these are pretty expensive though and an inkjet is the more affordable choice. But if you want better quality colour prints, faster colour printing and, if you print a heavy amount of colour, they can be worth the investment. Some laser models, like the i-SENSYS LBP7750Cdn, can print mono and colour. This model can shift an impressive 30ppm and has automatic double-sided printing. It’s an expensive model though and is only cost-effective if you regularly use your printer or it is in an office where multiple people will.

Extras

Multifunction printers
All-in-one devices allow you to combine your printer with a scanner, copier and some models offer fax capabilities, too. These are great for a home office and will save space with all the devices combined in one. Modern all-in-ones don’t compromise quality for combination but if you want specific features from your devices then you may not be able to find a multifunction printer to meet your needs.

Compact photo printers

The portable devices offer photo-lab quality prints without the need to connect up to a computer. You can print straight from your camera, memory card or even mobile phone and they are perfect for printing 4-by-6 inch photos.

Software
Canon printer drivers are pieces of software that need to be installed on your computer and converts data so it can be printed. Canon printers come with this software, usually on a CD, and you can get Canon printer drivers for any computer – such as MAC or PC. Different Canon models need specific drivers and, if you delete your application or lose the CD for example, then you can download the software from their website. You can also download new and updates drivers, too.
