Buying Guide - LED Monitors

Overview

An LED monitor is a version of the more known LCD TV. The difference is they use light-emitting diodes as a back light for the display instead of the fluorescent tubes on LCD models which allows LEDs to perform better. A big difference is the improved LED efficiency and they are around 30% more efficient than the fluorescent tubes in LCDs. This is even more noticeable in bigger monitors that use up more electricity and LEDs can save you money in the long run. However LED monitors are more expensive and you could pay up to 50% extra for the benefits. The good news though is that LED technology is gradually getting cheaper.

Because light-emitting diodes are extremely small it means LED monitors can be manufactured thinner than LCDs. So if you want a television that can easily be attached to the wall or doesn’t take up much space in your living then they are a good choice. If you have a small room the option to mount the monitor to the ceiling or wall is also appealing – so you don’t have to take up floor space with a stand.

The big difference with LEDs though is image quality. If you want the best picture, and are willing to pay the price for it, then you should consider an LED TV. You will need to find an LED TV that offers full-array backlighting though to enjoy the better quality. However if you want a super-slim LED television then this might not offer the same image quality as it uses edge-lit lighting which doesn’t offer as good a contrast ratio.

The contrast ratio is the difference in brightness between the darkest black and the brightest white that the monitor can produce. The higher the contrast ratio is then the better the image looks. A contrast ratio of 1,000:1 – which means the brightest white the monitor can produce is one thousand times brighter than the darkest black – is a good level and you can find this detail in any LED monitor review.

If you want to find the best LED monitor then Samsung and LG are two brands worth considering. They both offer big ranges of LED monitors and have some of the finest models on the market. Samsung LED monitors start with the C4000 which is a HD entry-model with colour enhancer. The next level up, C5100, has full HD capabilities and Samsung’s image boost programme Hyper Real Engine. From the C9000, the top-end model, you can get 3d capabilities, Samsung Smart TV and a 7.98mm super thin frame.

The EX-series is an affordable set of LG LED monitors which are 17.5mm thick and fit perfectly on your desktop with 20-23 inch monitors. When deciding on which size monitor you need – because you will sit close to the screen – bigger might not be better. A size around 20-24 should be fine and you won’t have to strain your eyes when close up. If you want a display to use as a television as well then you may want to consider a bigger size screen and LEDs range up to around 46 inch.
