Buying Guide - Portable Game Consoles

Introduction

Handheld Consoles continue to evolve at an electrifying pace and their premise is to give you flexibility for ‘on the move’ gaming. Fundamentally they are designed for the individual but some can be linked to other portable consoles, with the use of cables or a wireless network, for a multi-player format.

The pace at which this thriving market has developed, since the first one in 1977, means there are a multitude of handheld consoles available and this massive option is reflected in a wide-ranging price bracket.

Games Consoles generally now offer themselves as an entire entertainment centre. Online gaming is prevalent in console gaming whilst most also offer the capability to watch DVDs and some Blu-rays. They are becoming more streamlined to fit into their respective surroundings.

The Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS has taken technology developed in 3D televisions and in-effect adapted it to the portable console, so the user experiences three-dimensional effects without adding any extra software or components. The Nintendo 3DS tops a long line of handheld consoles and a majority of portable consoles have just one screen but utilise colour and a high quality of sound.

Game Consoles, and even some handheld consoles, are now very flexible and offer extra functions. Some have an ability to look at photos, listen to music, watch movies or even send messages. The innovation introduced on the Nintendo 3DS is the built-in Depth Slider which allows the user to select the intensity of the 3D impact, and it can even be turned off all together which means it can also play as a normal 2D console.

The Nintendo 3DS, continued to expand the manufacturer’s handheld profile with two screens; a top and a bottom which show 800x240 pixel resolution and 320x240, respectively – the top screen apportions 400 pixels for each eye to generate the 3D effect. Although handheld consoles are considered portable they do vary in size, so it’s important to check specifications. As with the size of handheld consoles they can also vary in colour, for example the Nintendo 3DS comes in Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black.

Many of the original portable consoles came equipped with the standard directional pad, and the Nintendo 3DS has taken that further with an analog circle pad, located just above the standard directional pad. The Nintendo 3DS has strived to take controllability even further by using motion sensor and gyro sensor, therefore enabling the user to gain further control with a tilt or a twist of the handheld console.

Just as its predecessor, the DS installed two webcams, the Nintendo 3DS harnesses the 3D technology to provide two cameras which enable 3D photos, and the use of a similar effect witnessed in the gaming aspects of the handheld console.

Console gaming and handheld consoles also come with a range of accessories. Consoles, including the Nintendo 3DS, use batteries to power them, but as with many other electronic devices within the market, they can be rechargeable or disposable.
