Overview

Laptop and desktop computers come in all shapes and sizes, with thousands of different chips, boards and operating systems designed to make them run faster and perform better. But no component is more important than the processor, or CPU, the computer’s brain and beating heart.

AMD and Intel are the two biggest processor manufacturers in the world, and while Intel have a reputation for producing the best performers outright, AMD computer processors are very competitive and tend to be cheaper in comparison. They also concentrate on back-compatibility, meaning that buying a new AMD does not mean having to buy a new motherboard or RAM.

Although both makes of processor run the same operating systems, it is not particularly easy to compare the two directly – they run at slightly different speeds, on different motherboards etc. – but it is certainly possible to make an AMD processors comparison.

There is a very wide range of AMD computer processors, meaning all types of users are catered for. Whether your priority is pure speed or minimal impact on the bank balance, you should find what you need. High-end

An AMD processors comparison shows that, for overall performance, the best AMD chip out there is the Opteron range, which now comes in multiple-core versions, upping performance and removing the need to buy further motherboards. These chips are designed for servers and workstations – extremely highly-specified computers meant for scientific and technical use – and not the desktops and laptops that most users are after. That is not to say processors for servers cannot be used in personal computers, but in order to get the full benefit of their considerable power, it would also be essential to upgrade your motherboard and RAM.

The X6 chip is a six-core processor, the first of its kind in the consumer market, and gives the best level of performance. Mid-Range

AMD processors comparison shows the Phenom I range to be AMD’s best chips for those looking for all-round capability without the extra cost of the truly top-of-the-range processors. The Phenom X4 and X3 were the AMD’s first three and four-core processors, providing quality processing that is comfortably on a level with Intel’s Core 2 Duo. Games and video should perform smoothly and simultaneously running a number of programmes should be a breeze.

The Phenom I chips are a better mid-range proposition than the Athlon II range in terms of pure performance, but that is not to say the Athlons are without their advantages. AMD Athlon Processors were the chips that announced the company’s arrival as a genuine rival to Intel, outperforming numerous versions of the bigger company’s processors and the Athlon II continued the line’s fine heritage when it became AMD’s first foray into dual-core processing.

Like the Phenom I X3 and X4, they support 64-bit operating systems, making better use of a computer’s random access memory (RAM), thus enabling computers to run quicker. That combined with the efficiency of a dual-core means the processor packs plenty of punch for such a reasonably-priced chip.

Budget

Many buyers will immediately be drawn to the best performers from the AMD processors comparison. And why not? They are brilliant performers that will remain usable and support software developments for longer. But the truth is that many users do not need to invest in absolutely the best CPUs around to match their needs.

If you are looking to replace the processor of an old machine with low RAM and memory then a budget AMD processor may very well be the best option for you. The same goes if your computer needs only to perform basic tasks like run Microsoft office, or give access to the internet and emails.

AMD released their Sempron range for this market. The name comes from the Latin word ‘semper,’ which means always, suggesting the processor’s suitability for everyday, standard applications. It is a slimmed down version of the Athlon range and the latest chips support 64-bit operating systems, separating them from purely low-cost options. While these chips come out at the bottom of the AMD processors comparison, they still offer much to a great deal of users.

Terminology

When browsing through the offers available on the internet and reading any AMD processors reviews online or in specialist magazines, you may well come across some obscure phrases that you could do with understanding. Below we have listed some of the key bits of jargon and given a little explanation for each to help you see the wood through the trees!

Dynamic Power Management

Chips with this capability – both Phenom ranges have it, as do the AMD Trurion chips you find in laptops – make sure their energy use is as efficient as possible while not sacrificing on processing power. Great for value for money.

Coolcore

Like Dynamic Power Management, this is designed to save power. Power is restricted to those parts of the chip that are in use, meaning that none is wasted. An excellent feature for laptop chips especially, this feature is also found in the Phenoms and Turion processors.

Cool n’ Quiet

Another feature aimed at increasing efficiency and decreasing energy use, Cool n’ Quiet technology reduced the power going to the processor when it is idle or working at a low level. Not only does this lead to less electricity costs, it also makes for a cooler processor and, as a result, less noise from the fan. The Phenom, Athlon and Sempron processors are all fitted with this feature.

Turbo Core

Unique to the Phenom II X6, this system boosts productivity by diverting power to the cores that are working hardest, ensuring that complex processes are carried out quicker. As you would expect from the current leader in the AMD processors comparison, this is a feature designed for users who will be pushing their computers to the limit. It also means that, even when your computer is working very hard, power usage is kept at a minimum.
