Buying Guide - Integrated Cooker Hood

The cost of an integrated cooker hood can vary widely, which just goes to show the differences in performance available. We want to make sure you get the best integrated cooker hood to suit your needs by explaining the difference between certain features and characteristics so you can buy with confidence.
Two major considerations to make are what your preferred extractions system and extraction rate are.
Extraction system – extraction or recirculation?
Extraction removes the smoke and smells and vents it to the outside through specially installed ducts. Recirculation filters smoke etc. from the air before reintroducing it into the room.

In an ideal world, everyone would choose integrated cooker hoods with extraction but it is worth considering these points.

While extraction totally removes dirty, smelly air and reduces the need for filters which hinder airflow and require routine changing, it also requires you to pay for ducts to be installed to vent to the outside and takes up more space.

Recirculation tends to be cheaper and takes up much less room, but filters need to be changed more regularly; also, the process is not always 100% successful and the rate at which the air is filtered tends to be slower.

Extraction Rate – What Do You Need?

As mentioned above the general rule is that an extraction system will vent the air quicker than a recirculation system can, because the filters for cooker hoods reduce the airflow on the latter. Both types of system require filters, but recirculation filters will impede the extraction rate more and will need to be replaced much more often.

They measure the rate in the metres3 moved per hour, and a general rule is that the cookerhood should change the air 12 times an hour. Measure the length, width and height of the kitchen, multiply these together to get the volume of the room then multiply that number to get the ideal extraction rate.

It might sound complicated so here is an example:
A kitchen that is 3m long by 3m wide and 2.5m tall is 22.5m3
22.5 times 12 is 270 so your required extraction rate would be 270m3/hour.
