How cooker hoods work

Complimenting your new kitchen with the right chimney hood is vital, for both practicality and appearance. In the main, cookers create smoke, steam and odour which in turn produce layers of dirt and grease on your kitchen walls, ceiling and even beyond. It is the job of the cooker hood’s chimney to clear this as best it can, and chimney cooker hoods work either through extraction or recirculation.

A professional opinion would prompt the extraction method for your cooker hood’s chimney as it takes all the unwanted odours etc, out of your kitchen. However, installing the extraction method often ends up more expensive as it incorporates further ducting and installation costs, and although extraction may be preferred, due to a lack of space logistically it is not always possible. The second method for your cooker hood’s chimney, recirculation, essentially cleans the dirty air created by the cooker before releasing it back into the environment.

Where chimney cooker hoods with extraction need ducting and access to an outside wall to operate successfully, recirculation can be fitted almost anywhere which aids its popularity. The extraction method for the cooker hood’s chimney also means no charcoal filter which is positive in two respects. There is no need to replace them when worn out, but also, its absence means a higher air flow rate. Conversely then, recirculation does require a charcoal filter and so negates both points just mentioned.

Styles of cooker hoods

There are many styles of cooker hoods on the market; conventional hoods, chimney hoods, island hoods and canopy hoods cover most bases. The conventional hoods are generally smaller and fit into cabinets just above the hobs. Chimney hoods are a little bigger, but within this, they come in a variation of sizes; ranging from 30cm to 150cm and these days are sleek and made in stainless steel or come as glass cooker hoods.

The natural progression from chimney hoods moves to the Island chimney cooker hoods which require more space as they are suspended from your ceiling, but allow the cooker to be the focal point of the kitchen. These chimney cooker hoods offer further elegance to your kitchen’s aesthetic, but as mentioned; space is required for such indulgence. There are slight deviations from the styles of chimney cooker hoods listed, such as downdraft extractors. While most other styles work from above, by hinging or being built-in, the downdraft style works closer to the cooker and hobs. They are integrated into the worktop where the cooker is located, either beside or behind the cooker, and due to their position often work better than those chimney cooker hoods positioned above.

Chimney cooker hoods can be noisy so having them on high speed prior to cooking, to get some air circulated is recommended, then lowering the speed when the meal is ready, to allow it to continue its job with more discretion. Essentially then, chimney cooker hoods vary in size, style and ultimately cost, but they are now sleeker than ever.
