Tom Tom is such a successful player in the GPS navigation game that the name of the brand and the type of machine itself are practically interchangeable, but while a memorable name might help, a reputation for quality and technology has kept them ahead of rivals like Navigon and Garmin.

Maps and Routing

Tom Toms come with the latest maps of the country and if new ones come out within 30 or 90 days – depending on the model you buy – you will get a free update, but have to pay for new downloads after that. Tom Toms are more than just a map, though, with advanced lane guidance (making sure you are in the right lane at junctions) and IQ Routes (calculating travel times for different times of day) as standard. The Tom Tom XL, Via and Tom Tom Go come with HD Traffic, which updates traffic every two minutes, while the Start, Go and Via have Eco Routes which calculates the most environmentally friendly journey from A to B.

Screen Size

Touch Screen

Touch Screen comes as standard on Tom Toms but one feature that sets the Tom Tom Go apart from the Tom Tom XL and others is the ability to pinch to zoom in and out or scroll through menus, much like on a smart phone, allowing you brilliant control quite literally at your finger tips. It is a superb feature for people who will be doing plenty of city driving.

Voice Command

The Tom Tom Go and Tom Tom Via both come with voice control, giving you the ability to carry out more than 150 tasks just by talking to your Tom Tom. It certainly makes for a safer ride, and people who clock plenty of miles might view it as an essential, but there is a premium to pay over other, less advanced models like the Tom Tom XL.

Cameras

Traffic cameras are a major distraction, and a major pain, on the road. While the Tom Tom Start offers information on fixed cameras, as well as fixed speed cameras and, the Tom Tom XL, Go and Via also give you real-time information on mobile speed cameras.
