The technology

Each car GPS is fitted with a receiver that communicates with numerous satellites to determine your current location. As well as where you are, the receiver is also able to pick up on your speed, your direction and your elevation. Once the receiver has downloaded its required data it translates the information onto maps already installed on the device. The car GPS will constantly recalculate itself in relation to the satellite and is therefore able to give you a real time picture of where you are and where you are heading. Modern GPS contain receivers of up to 40 channels meaning they can track more satellites, more often resulting in better accuracy. In order to communicate with the satellites effectively the gps system requires an unobstructed view of the sky. How well your gps works is dependent upon this so it is important you are able to place it in a location in your car where nothing will get in its way. Most users will have it on their windscreen or dashboard so it remains unobstructed and easy to see when driving so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

Types

The most popular type of GPS is known as a portable navigation system, or PNS. They hold most of the features of the top of the range, or built-in car GPS but have the added bonus of being small enough to be used as a gps handheld system. Their compact size means you can buy one for the family and transport it between cars while it is also able to go in your luggage.

The features in a PNS are always advancing, with some now offering voice command. However, compared to the more expensive built-in systems there are some negatives associated with a PNS. Due to its portable nature the screen is much smaller making it harder to read on occasion. There is also a need to run power to the device from the cigarette lighter, while the device should be kept hidden to avoid break-ins. On the positive side though, portable gps systems are released regularly meaning the latest features and updates are always available.

There are other types of car gps systems available on the market, including in-dash systems that are not already part of the car. These systems are known as aftermarket in-dash systems and are usually sold as part of a stereo system. They sit in the dash and act as a built in car gps.

There are now also many smart phones available on the market that offer GPS systems. These can be mounted onto the dashboard to be used in place of a PNS.

As mentioned previously some car manufacturers offer a pre built-in car gps system. They can be an expensive add-on to the car but can provide larger and clearer screens with some offering touch screen or voice command. However, due to their makeup they are not portable and are restricted to use in your car only, which also means they are often difficult to update.

Finally, and perhaps the least common, type of gps is a telematics system. These combine the gps technology with cellular technology to offer their users the option to access emergency help and other services through the device.

Features

All portable navigation systems provide users with pre-loaded maps and spoken directions, however there are still plenty of other features on these systems that vary between brands and types.

Screen size is possibly the most common with varying sizes available. The sizes typically range between 2.5 to 7 inches with the smaller screens harder to read. Some systems will speak road names to turn into to make your journey that much easier while others provide real time traffic reports to help you beat the congestion.

Another feature to make the journey easier with a car gps system is the predictive date entry and dynamic search feature. This makes searching for towns or road names much easier as it will predict what you are typing, meaning you don't have to enter the whole word, which is particularly handy if you are in a hurry.

A detour feature will allow the car gps system to pick up an alternative route for you if you hit a traffic jam while route options allow you to choose between the fastest or shortest route among other things. There are even features to help with upcoming manoeuvres with reality view and lane assistance options in some car gps models.

Among all these there are also accessories like mounting and features including MP3 players, Bluetooth technology that can connect your phone to your car gps and use it as a hands free device. Picture viewers and video players are also available while most devices are able to be changed into a foreign language.

Brands

There are hundreds of brands on the market but some are more renowned for their work with car gps and handheld gps systems. One of the market leaders is the Garmin gps systems; their systems regularly score well in gps reviews with the Nuvi 1340 and the Nuvi 1490 being two of their best selling products.

In addition to Garmin GPS there is also the TomTom brand which was one of the first to sell car GPS. They are renowned for their easy to use systems with customisable options including celebrity voices.

Mio is another popular brand without enjoying the same dominance in the marketplace. Its systems do not boast the volume of products that Garmin gps systems or TomTom do but generally do well in GPS reviews with the budget and mid level products.

Navman is also a brand that is worth looking out for, as it always scores well in gps reviews while Magellan is known as the first company to produce a gps system that responds to voice commands. The final company relating to car gps systems is Nexstar; this brand is relatively new to the game but is enjoying high sales at more affordable prices.
