Garmin are one of the leading brands in delivering GPS technology in a range of products. One of their most popular products is the GPS Garmin Nuvi - a range of sat-nav devices. These range from the more affordable navigators, such as the Nuvi 205 series, which gives you the basics like turn-by-turn directions, up to the top of the range GPS Garmin Nuvi 3700 series, an ultra-slim navigator with glass multi-touch displays and an abundance of added features such as pre-loaded maps from all over the world and ecoRoute - an app which calculates the most fuel-efficient route.
GPS to suit your budget
For the lower-end models you will be expected to be paying around £100. Garmin are considered one of the best in the business and, if you want a well-designed, basic sat nav for occasional use, then this would be an ideal choice. The more basic models usually come with preloaded street maps of the UK and Ireland, spoken street names, fuel-save software and a few other features.
However, if you rely on a sat nav every day, then it may be worth considering paying the extra for a high-end model. The real top-end models, the 2400 series, 3000 series and the 3700 series, will set you back from around £180 up to £299 for the latest model. The higher-end models are ultra-thin designs packed with capacitive touchscreen, high resolution displays with an impressive user interface. You really do get a lot of bang for your buck.
Garmin also specialise in handheld GPS devices. These devices pin point your location, but are designed for off road use. If you enjoy walking, hiking or trekking then these handheld GPS devices are becoming essential additions to a map and compass. Whether you enjoy the occasional weekend walk, or a professional mountain climber - there is a handheld GPS device to suit your needs. Basic handhelds are ideal for occasional walkers and can save waypoints, routes and tracks - and are much easier to handle than a map! The Garmin eTrex H is a lightweight, affordable starting model with a decent 17-hour battery life. It may be worth considering a model that is waterproof, such as the Garmin GPS 72H, especially if you walk a lot in the UK!
If you want to invest in a more sophisticated model then there are a host of high-end handheld devices with pre-loaded Garmin GPS Maps. The Garmin eTrex Vista H offers detailed basemaps from all over the UK and, with 24MB of memory, the option to add new maps. If you’re looking for more advanced features, the eTrex Summit HC, has an altimeter that tracks your altitude and is useful for monitoring weather conditions. The Garmin Oregon and Montana are the top-end models and will set you back a fair dollar but have a host of impressive features.
All the models in these ranges have detailed, colour touchscreens and have detailed maps for Europe and the rest of the world - perfect for if you hike on holiday. Also, some have a built-in camera which allows you to take capture the perfect hidden pictures, and with GPS coordinates will help you find it again! All these devices come with wireless data sharing - so you can easily exchange routes with fellow hikers!
