One crucial aspect to consider when buying a printer fax copier is the quality of the printing. The first thing to determine is whether you want an inkjet or a laser printer.

Inkjet printers are more the traditional home option. They use real ink, sprayed onto the paper through nozzles inside the machine. Laser printers use a laser beam to imprint words and pictures onto paper using toner.

Laser printing is cheaper than inkjet, and if you are looking for your printer fax copier to print off a lot of documents, especially in black and white, then it is the best option. But if you are more likely to want to print colourful images and detailed photos, then an inkjet printer would be more suitable.

However, bear in mind that manufacturers do not include the warm up time in the PPM speed, so some will take longer than advertised.

If you will be doing plenty of scanning and copying, it is important that you select a printer fax copier scanner which has a high resolution and strong colour depth. The more pixels per inch (ppi) there is, the sharper the image will be. So if scanning photos is what you are looking for, select one with a greater ppi. A resolution of 300 ppi is normally suitable for photo printing purposes, if you are not planning to enlarge your photo.

Another crucial element to check is whether there is an auto document feeder. If you are likely to need to scan or copy long documents, then checking if a document feeder is present and if so, how many pages can it take at once, is a good idea.

Fax is slowly being phased out, but many businesses still rely on it. If you want fax functionality take care to see whether it is included, as many all in one printers have begun to omit it.

Other considerations

There are various other features which some models possess. Wireless all in one printers are commonplace, and if you want a machine which the whole family can print from without having to bring their computers to it, then they are the best option.

If printing photos is going to be a frequent activity, check whether the printer has a memory card slot which will enable you to print from your camera, rather than via a computer.

When buying a printer fax copier, consider brands like HP, Lexmark, Canon and Epsom, all of which have a good reputation in the printing world.
