Everywhere you look these days, there’s a Smartphone. Whether it’s an iPhone or a Blackberry, an HTC or even Nokia, everyone seems to have the latest phone technology. However, some people are yet to be converted and if you are one of those people, looking to delve into the Smartphone market for the first time, choosing your first phone can be daunting. You may be tired to go for the most popular, such as the iPhone, because it is what everyone else has. But there are many things to consider when purchasing your first Smartphone such as whether you prefer a touch screen or keyboard, for example. Operating Systems (OS)

This is a major part of the choice when buying a new Smartphone. The way the phone works and what it can and can’t do is based on what operating system it runs on. In the same way that computers will run on either Windows or Mac, Smartphones run on a variety of different operating systems. However, unlike computers you cannot change the operating system of your phone once you have bought it, so it is important to pick a phone whose operating system will fit you well right from the start.

The current list of operating systems on the Smartphone market includes iPhone OS, Blackberry, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Palm OS. Currently iPhone OS, Android, and Palm OS are updated on a regular basis which fix software glitches and keep the running of the phone fresh. The other systems are updated, but not as regularly. Windows mobile as the name suggests is run by Windows and operates the Windows Phone 7, some HTC phones as well as some Samsung Smartphones. It is known for its power and variety of features but can utilise quite an old fashioned interface. On the down side it can be quite slow on occasions and is known to be difficult to use with multiple menus to navigate before finding what you want.

The Android OS is found on the Google Nexus One among others and is developed by Google. Its plus points include a wide range of apps that are not offered to other OS users while being used on many phones. The Blackberry system is renowned for being the best for email, making it a popular choice for business men and women. However, if you are looking for a personal phone some say the operating system doesn’t stand up to some of the others while offering the least in terms of apps. Palm OS is very fast but falls down in the app department while Symbian is commonly found on Nokia phones and boasts HDMI ports among other features.

Finally the iPhone OS which powers all iPhones, is perhaps the most easy to use and navigate. The OS also leads the way in terms of apps but is well known for its strict approach in terms of what becomes available.

Applications

The great thing about Smartphones is that they are completely customisable by the applications you choose to have on them. All Smartphones have their own app store that allows users to download, install or delete apps from their phone. iPhones have the most apps to offer you with well over 100,000 but most people only really need about a dozen apps to be able to cover most of their needs. All apps are produced specifically for the OS that they were designed for, meaning you are not able to transfer apps between phones or operating systems. For basic, every day apps like Facebook, email and Twitter most OS’ are well covered. However, the drawback of the iPhone system is it doesn’t let you communicate in real time. This means that you are able to receive a message on Facebook, for example, instantly but you aren’t able to respond to it unless you stop whatever you are running on the phone, open the Facebook app and respond. Android phones are much better for this sort of thing as they allow you to simultaneously run apps in the background. This means you are able to respond to any message you receive as quickly as it reaches you.

If games are what you are after then the iPhone is certainly the right choice. They boast the most number of games in their app store and are making constant deals with big entertainment companies to ensure they are ahead of the entertainment curve.

If you are after a Smartphone to enhance your business then the likes of Blackberry, Windows Phones or Symbian OS’ are the preferred options amongst professionals. These phones all offer office apps that run perfectly on their OS. The likes of word processing and spreadsheets are all available on these phones while the Blackberry is particularly geared towards emails making it a key mobile tool for many businesses.

Other features

Buying a Smartphone opens you to a whole realm of possibilities. You will have a mobile media centre in your pocket with the ability to watch videos, play music and open documents through your device. Navigation need never be a problem again either as most Smartphones have built-in maps and navigation tools, while others make them available in downloadable apps.

Should you need to capture a moment on camera your phone will come to the rescue with all Smartphones fitted with a camera, some better than others. The camera will also allow you to film video footage with apps available to enhance your camera even further. But for all of these apps, pictures and videos you will need to store them. iPhones and some Nokias only allow for internal storage, however, most other Smartphones offer external storage through SD cards. With the iPhone, like its storage, the battery is internal and cannot be removed. Other Smartphones batteries are removable, however all Smartphones suffer from poor battery life because they operate as pocket sized computers. It is worthwhile looking into buying an additional, back-up battery if it is available.

Another big factor that often sways people between choosing their Smartphone is its design. Phones often come in three varieties, touch only, touch and type or type only. An iPhone or HTC tattoo is touch only while most Blackberries, although not all, provide keyboards for those who prefer type only handsets. But with all Smartphones it comes down to personal preference. Before purchasing it would be worth going to shop so you can handle different devices to work out which type you are the most comfortable with. Buying the wrong type could seriously impact on your Smartphone experience.

As the wide range of options available can be daunting, it is a good idea to spend some time going through numerous Smartphone reviews before purchasing.
