Making a choice

If you are looking at buying a Samsung mobile phone then the first decision you have to make is which type of device you want. This is dependent upon what you will use the mobile phone for and how much you are willing to pay. The newest Samsung mobile phones can cost you a lot of money but there are always new devices hitting the market. So if there is a model you really want, but can’t afford, then if you’re willing to wait a while the price of the handset will quickly come down as newer models are released.

There are three types of Samsung mobile phones: the standard mobile phone, smartphones and tablets. Conventional mobile phones are the cheapest option of the three and have the most variety of styles and models to choose from. If you want a mobile phone for the simple functions of texting and ringing people – or are put off by complicated technology – then there are a range of basement priced handsets that do the basics. If you want a smartphone, but can’t afford the expensive handsets, then there are some great new Samsung mobile phones that have similar features – such as touchscreens – at much lower prices.
Smartphones and tablets are devices with the latest in mobile phone technology – offering you amazing PC-like multimedia capabilities. These are the higher-end of the price scale but you certainly get a lot of features for your money.

Types

Touchscreen phone
There are several touchscreen mobile phones with similar and simpler features that you will find in a smartphone. The Samsung GT C3300 (or Samsung Champ) is a compact touchscreen phone that has a 2.4 inch resistive touchscreen and a sized down version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. Some higher-end touchscreen phones also have superior quality AMOLED displays, too. The advantage of these phones are that they don’t cost as much as smartphones and are ideal if you aren’t comfortable using the tricky technology and broad range of features on smartphones. You can get a touchscreen phone with access to downloadable apps, good quality cameras and good internet capabilities – especially for using your social media websites.

Qwerty Phones
Qwerty phones, such as the Galaxy Pro and Genio, are excellent if you are constantly using your mobile phone for sending emails and don’t want to waste much time. The Qwerty style keypad allows you to type quickly and efficiently and some models come with programmes that let you open and edit word documents on your phone. The Qwerty keyboards generally take up half the size of the phone though so screens are smaller than touchscreen phones.

Sliding and folding phones
These Samsung mobile phones offer some of the trendiest and stylish designs at affordable prices. A flip or drop down phone offer something different to the standard phone design and models don’t have to sacrifice any capabilities. The Tocco Ultra is a sliding, touchscreen phone that has a high-quality AMOLED display.

Bar phones
These are the cheapest Samsung mobile phones that have a simple style and are easy to use.

Smartphones - Android powered
This is the latest Samsung operating system and the Galaxy range of phones is powered by Android. New Samsung mobile phones use the latest Android OS – 2.3 Gingerbread – and come with Super AMOLED displays. If you like to watch videos, view images or browse the internet on your phone then this is a great feature. It has superior colour and readability and also has good battery consumption.

Another important feature to consider on smartphones is the processor size. The bigger the processor the faster and smoother the mobile phone will run. Big processors, such as the Galaxy S II’s 1.2GHz Dual Core, will also be able to handle running multiple applications responsively and provide speedy internet browsing.
With your Android phone you can also connect to the Android Marketplace which has over 50,000 apps on offer. Devices usually come pre-loaded with a host of applications – such as Google Maps and Gmail – but you can download more from the store. If you want to add lots of new apps to your phone though make sure you choose a device with a big internal memory – over 16GB. If not, you can always invest in a memory card to boost your storage space and all smartphones have memory card slots.

Smartphones - Bada and Windows powered
These are the operating systems used on older mobile phone models such as the Wave and the Omnia. Bada was Samsung’s own operating system but was widely criticised and Android was chosen as the operating system for new Samsung smartphones. The Bada operating system allows you to customise your phone by adding a range of home screens personalised with already installed and downloadable widgets – from the Samsung store. These older operating systems are fine if you want a starter smartphone – and are the cheapest option – but don’t have the latest technology of their Android counterparts.

Tablets and more

Tablets
Samsung have one tablet model – the Galaxy Tab – on the market. The Galaxy Tab has a 7 inch touchscreen and is fitted with a range of entertainment and communication features. It is powered by the Android 2.2 OS and has four hubs – music, media, readers and social. The E-reading hub means you can fit a library of books into your tablet and it also has a built-in GPS navigation system. It is ideal for watching movies on too and can play high-definition quality videos and surround sound with the SoundAlive 3D audio programme.

Another aspect to consider when thinking about getting a new Samsung mobile phone is phone unlocking. Unlocking Samsung mobile phones can save you money. There are plenty of websites that guide you through the process and can unlock most models of phone. It means you can choose whichever operator you like and gives you the ability to chop and change sim cards. Also, if you are looking to sell a phone then unlocking it will increase the resale value.

If you have bought a mobile phone with low memory, or you are close to filling up your memory with the apps you have been downloading, then Samsung also sell memory cards. They have four types of cards – SD, Micro SD, SDHC and SDHC micro – and offer cards from 4GB to 16GB. The cards have different variations of advantages and disadvantages and the micro cards come with adapters to make them full-sized SD cards, too.
