Conclusion: Samsung's Star is an ideal budget phone for those wanting to dip their toes in the touchscreen pool but experienced users will find limitations.

Conclusion: The Samsung Tocco Lite has found an enthusiastic audience of social networkers who appreciate its good looks and price tag, but it fails to hit any great heights in terms of features

Pro : This is a stylish touch-screen phone with great social networking for a good price

Cons : There could be improvements to the resistive touch-screen – there are lots of accidental key presses

Summary: Gadget fans will remember 2009 as the year touchscreen blowers went from the play things of first adopters and nouveau posers to bargain techie essentials. The Samsung Tocco Lite is the latest cheap mobile treat to land on our doorstep. So how does it...

Conclusion: A decent enough basic phone which lacks great extras

Pro : Surprisingly good touchscreen, slim frame

Cons : Lacks killer features to make it stand out from the crowd

Description
Samsung GT S5230 Tocco Lite

Global description

The popular Samsung GT S5230 Tocco Lite is perfect for anyone who wants a smartphone, but doesn't want to pay smartphone prices.

One of the handset's best qualities is its design.  The phone has a handsome 3inch LCD touch-screen which gives you a nice big space to see what you're doing.  Combine this with its slick, streamline body and it makes for a stylish and user-friendly package.

The phone only weighs 92gs - less than a peeled banana.  It also fits nicely in the palm of the hand and has a great battery life, so you won't be carrying around your charger with you wherever you go (according to Samsung the mobile has a whopping 700 hours battery life on standby).

PLUS the phone has a good music player and a decent enough camera. So is there a catch? Well, in a word, yes. Because this is a 2G and not a 3G phone and it has no wi-fi connection. This means the internet is slightly slower than on other smartphones, which can be particularly problematic when streaming videos from YouTube.

But if internet speed is going to be a game-changer for you, then you may be interested in the Tocco Lite's bigger, more expensive brother - the Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra.

Features / Characteristics

Let's start with the internet. This 2G phone may be slightly slower than other smartphones, but it does offer a 'full browser'.  This means browsing the web on your phone will be a similar experience to browsing the web on your computer. The Samsung GT S5230 Tocco Lite also has built-in links to Google, which makes searching the internet or checking emails very convenient.

To go with the phone's big screen, it has a nice 3megapixel camera which comes with many fun extras.  These include an easy-to-use photo album and a nifty 'Smile Shot' setting.  You can also tweak photos on your handset and then upload them to the web thanks to more built-in links to Facebook, Flickr and Photobucket.

The mobile's Tocco Lite's 3inch LCD touch-screen was specially designed to be less twitchy and more 'intuitive', so it won't do strange things because a breeze has picked up in a nearby county.  If you've ever touched a phone's screen expecting it to do one thing, only for it to do another, you will know how irritating this can be… how very, very irritating.

For music, the GT S5230 Tocco Lite is fantastic. It recognises a wide range of different formats and has an FM radio so you can listen to your favourite stations on the go. On top of this, the phone comes with a Music Recognition service, so you can play it a few seconds of a track and it will tell you what it is - which is extremely 'cool', if not massively useful.

You will be impressed by the phone's '3D sound effects', good acoustics and equaliser.  However the down-side is that you have to use the headphones provided by Samsung, which are decent if not spectacular.  And without a memory-card storage space is limited to 50MB, but with a card you can expand that to 8GB. That is a lot of songs, a lot of photos and a lot of videos.

And finally, if you enjoy personalising your stuff, you will love the widgets on the Samsung GT S5230 Tocco Lite. Whether it's choosing a clock, picking your favourite background or receiving ongoing news feeds, you can really put your stamp on this phone. And for those long, boring waits at bus stops or train stations, you'll be pleased to discover the Tocco Lite comes with many fun games.
