Plugging in the power lead is fiddly. Design of interface could be better, it needs a big "back to current route" button as it is possible to get lost in the menus..

Good Points
Nice big screen, works brilliantly once you've got it programmed to the right place (despite living on a mile long residential road it insisted couldn't find us, insisting we lived on the next road). Good, clear onscreen and verbal directions. Lovely slim size.
Bad Points
Atrocious instructions ie. there really aren't any apart from the absolute basics. I bought this for my parents (in their 70's) and sadly there is no way they will ever find or use any of the options other than straightforward location finding which it still took me a while to explain to them. Very poor, it would hardly have cost much to put a few more pages in in the little booklet. The manufacturer should bear in mind that not every purchaser is gadget savvy, my father was appalled that a technical product would be sold without an instruction manual! Really disappointing.

      10 out of 10

Summary: TomTom's original XL was great for anyone wanting a large-screen satnav at a reasonable price. As the name suggests, the IQ Routes edition has the more advanced route planning system, which has been a boon in TomTom's pricier models for a while now.

      8 out of 10

Summary: The second incarnation of TomTom's widescreen XL offers a simpler interface.

Conclusion: Despite the Start2 reducing the cost of TomTom sat-navs that little bit further, the company still hasn't quite cracked the most value-oriented section of the market. The XL2 is only slightly more expensive, and the extra screen space makes it more...

Summary: Boasting IQ Routes - allowing you to measure the fastest route based on the time of day - the TomTom XL sounds impressive.

Conclusion: Combining navigational skills with road statistics, TomTom’s latest sat navs come with IQ Routes, a useful feature that was previously available only on the company's high-end Go models. By measuring your fastest route based on actual road speeds at a...

Conclusion: This is a must-have sat-nav for the regular driver. In addition, its IQ Routes feature is the ideal companion if you live in a city. Those of you who live in your cars will probably want to go for a model with traffic tracking.

Pro : Easy to use ; IQ Routes will be very useful for city dwellers ; Small practical suction mount ; Compact

Cons : The GPS sensor however is sometimes slow to start up

Description
TomTom XL IQ Routes Edition 2

Global Description

The TomTom XL IQ Routes Edition 2 has proved a very popular satellite-navigation system with consumers and is an excellent choice as it is an improvement on its predecessor, the TomTom ONE, while still in keeping with the classic TomTom design.

Weighing in at 183g it is light enough to be carried around in a bag. Its size means it is able to be placed in a large pocket should you wish to keep it on your person if you don't want to leave it in the car.

The 4.3" screen is wider than its predecessor, meaning greater visibility of the roads around you so if you are stuck in traffic you can see if there is another possible route through the back roads.

The key difference is the start-up screen menu which is simpler and is therefore faster to use. You just plug it in and off you go making it easy for those buying sat-navs for the first time. A complaint of previous TomToms was the amount of options on the menu screen which they have now corrected.

As with most sat-navs the TomTomXL IQ Routes Edition 2 is stuck onto the windscreen and the device is taken off the holder. Police advise owners to remove the holder as well as cleaning the windscreen mark on leaving your vehicle because potential thieves will see there could be a sat-nav in the car and break into it. The last thing anybody wants to do after going for lunch is to call out a car window repair service.

Features/Characteristics

The TomTom XL IQ Routes editon 2's spoken instructions include street names to help make turnings clearer, enabling you to keep your eyes on the road, and not on the surrounding roads.

The large touchscreen makes it easier to select the option you want to use on the TomTom XL IQ Routes 2, ensuring less time putting in the postcode of where you wish to go to, a major step forward from the previous version.

The TomTomXL IQ Routes 2 contains 38 spoken navigation languages, from UK English to Lithuanian, and the user interface application comes in 28 languages, meaning it can be used by a lot of people, anywhere. The spoken street name languages are Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and English (US and UK), enabling most people in Europe to get the best possible features.

The maps have been corrected in this edition meaning drivers will no longer be going down dead ends or told to do a U-Turn when the destination is ahead of them. The new system takes into account the traffic flows and average speed of the road which gives you a very accurate time of arrival.

The XL IQ Routes Edition 2 will keep you informed of the current speed limits, perfect for the M25, so you are not spending your time worried about the speedometer. The system also contains where the fixed speed cameras are, at the time of the software being installed. This means that not only will The Routes Edition 2 save you money on speeding fines (not that you should be speeding anyway) it will also lower the distraction of checking the speed limit.

There are two versions of the TomTomXLIQ Routes 2, which are Europe and Regional. The Europe version is more expensive but has detailed coverage throughout Western Europe and most of Central Europe. The Regional version is cheaper but covers Britain and Ireland extensively and you can correct any mistakes, or changes to the road laws. With both options if a new map for the device is made available within 30 days of purchase then you can download it for free.

For those difficult junctions the it clearly shows you which lane to be in. This lowers the chances of crashes at these junctions, subsequently improving road safety, saving on those hefty insurance bills.

In the event of an emergency you can use the "Help me!" emergency menu which provides details of the nearest hospitals and also roadside assistance firms meaning you won't be stuck in the event of a problem.

On its own the battery will last for three hours, but it comes with a USB charger compatible with the car meaning you will not be caught out with the battery failing. In the box you will also find an EasyPort™ mount which folds into the back of the device for easy removal of the TomTom XL IQ Routes 2 from the windscreen. There is also documentation containing a guide as well as a TomTom safe drive leaflet.
