    Summary: With compact cameras slimming down, folding optics becoming more sophisticated and prices dropping, more and more waterproof models are appearing. Nikon's first waterproof Coolpix is the AW100.

    Conclusion: The Nikon Coolpix AW100 produces reasonable results and packs in many features, but it does struggle with highlights. The easy access controls could be better designed and this camera does sit towards the top end in terms of price.

    Pro : Packed with features, solid build

    Cons : Image noise, controls can be a little fiddly, action button controls could be better

    Conclusion: The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a compact water- and weather-proof snapper aimed at divers, hikers and outdoor types in general. However, the lens and sensitivity are slightly disappointing, which ultimately makes us prefer rivals like the Panasonic FT3.

    Pro : Waterproof (10 m), shockproof (1.5 m) and coldproof (-10°C) ; Responsive (autofocus, start-up) ; Easy to use ; GPS works faster than in most cameras (except in built-up areas)

    Cons : Picture quality could be better, especially from 800 ISO upwards ; Sound quality in video mode ; Videos are under-exposed when filmed indoors
