The Canon G12 is a high-end point-and-shoot that sports an image sensor that is larger than that typically found in a fixed lens camera. It sports an optical independent viewfinder, an articulated rear LCD, and a substantial, albeit lightweight, body...
Conclusion:
The Canon G12 is such a substantial camera, that it feels wrong to title it simple as a “point-and-shoot.” While it doesn’t hold a candle to fixed-lens juggernauts like the Fuji X100, its size, customizability, image quality, and accessory options—not...

Canon Powershot G12
Global Description
Succeeding the acclaimed G11 the Canon Powershot G12 offers powerful pictures, optimum handling and control to both professionals and enthusiasts.
The Canon Powershot G12 is a compact camera aimed at two markets. First up are the DSLR owners who need a back up camera to take out and about with them.
Secondly, photo enthusiasts looking for a camera that looks and feels like a DSLR but one that's not quite as big and bulky, and a little more portable. Either way the Canon Powershot G12 should be a serious consideration.
However, this camera is by no means light and flimsy, with a weight of 401g, but unlike most DSLR cameras, it can fit into a jacket pocket for ease of use, as long as you have the lens retracted, but still retains its sturdy feel.
Delivering high performance in a relatively small package the Canon Powershot G12 offers you an image stabilised 5x optical zoom with a large focal range, a fast lens and the ability to shoot in RAW and JPEG formats.
It isn't just photography that the Canon Powershot G12 deals in either with 720p High Definition video capture at 24 frames a second providing you with the chance to capture those magic moments on tape as well as film.
Features/Characteristics
The Canon Powershot G12 is feature rich and has plenty to offer you. It is the first model in the G series to offer an HS system. This combines a highly responsive 10.0 megapixel sensor with DIGIC 4 processing to produce high quality shots in all lighting conditions, even low light shooting.
This compact camera has a higher ISO meaning you can experience faster shutter speeds which will reduce the amount of blur in motion images and reduce the need for a flash. The Powershot G12's lens covers 28-140mm for added flexibility and clarity while the Image Stabiliser will correct your shaky shots. The Hybrid IS gives you sharper images when shooting in macro.
The Canon Powershot G12 boasts a PureColour II vari-angle LCD screen for colour performance and contrast and has a handy ability of being adjustable when shooting at those awkward angles. The screen also offers assistance when checking the camera is horizontal by showing an Electronic Level.
Another feature of the camera is the ability to put shooting in your hands and give you complete control with a full manual mode with RAW format. This gives you greater control when you come to edit the photo.
As mentioned earlier you can also shoot high quality video with the Powershot G12 with the 720p High Definition movie capture with stereo sound. There is also the ability to connect to a HD television through the HDMI connection on the camera.
The features do not end there; if you place your Canon Powershot G12 on a tripod you can make use of the High Dynamic Range mode which takes many exposures of the same image and brings them together in your photo to capture a high contrast picture in greater detail.
There is a lot the Powershot G12 can do to help you as a photographer too; for instance, the use of its Smart Auto feature will use Scene Detection Technology to spot the best image from a possible 28 giving you better results, while in the same mode the Canon Powershot G12 will use Smart Flash Exposure to determine the level of flash power and usage for you.
The camera will give you a variety of shooting ranges from 3:2, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:5 which allows you flexibility in shooting without worrying about the need to edit the photo afterwards.
The Canon Powershot G12 is also customisable with its supporting accessories like the Lens Filter Adapter that allows additions of 5mm filters. There is also a hotshoe which can be used with the Canon Speedlite flashes and you can even buy a waterproof case to take underwater shots up to 40m.
Finally there is a world of connectivity available to Canon Powershot G12 users by joining Canon's iMAGE GATEWAY. This allows you to store up to 2GB of images or videos and allows you to share your creative results with family and friends through mobile browsing.
