I recently tried to make a return to

I recently tried to make a return to asda with much difficulty.
I had pre-ordered a game online which arrived the day of it's release and on the same day my brother had bought it for me as a gift from asda. When I tried to return it in store the next day I was told I couldn't get money back for it even though it was still unopened, fully shrink-wrapped, had the security tag intact and a receipt.

After 15 minutes of trying to return it I had to in the end settle for a gift card.
I work in retial and know all about 'trade law'. These people have know idea what they are doing.
