      Toshiba HD-E1

Review summary: When it comes to choosing between Blu-ray and HD DVD, one factor is likely to sway the buying public most - price. And right now HD DVD has the upper hand, courtesy of players like the Toshiba HD-E1

Pros: Cheaper than Blu-ray, Superb picture quality, Ethernet port

Cons: Limited connectivity, Slow start-up, Lack of 1080p output

Verdict: The lack of 7.1 channel support and 1080p are disappointing but at this price performance is magnificent

Toshiba HD-XE1 HD DVD player Review

      By Stuart Miles

Review summary: It's the company's flagship model, but is it worth the bother?

Pros: Picture quality, 1080p support, HD DVD disc features like accessing menus mid film

Cons: Not much better than the company's HD-E1 or Microsoft's HD DVD drive for Xbox 360

Verdict: Good, but there are cheaper alternatives out there, even from Toshiba that will serve your needs

Review summary: Toshiba's HD-XE1 is an HD DVD player that can display 1080p high-definition video. It's exceptionally well-built, features a good range of connections and the picture quality is excellent -- if only it supported Blu-ray too...

Pros: Picture quality; remote control; Dolby TrueHD support; good quality DVD upscaling; build quality

Cons: Blue lights everwhere; basic front panel display; still fairly expensive

Verdict: For getting the very best out of HD DVDs you really can't go wrong with the Toshiba HD-XE1. The extra audio outputs, 1080p support and HDMI 1.3 make this one of the best next-generation DVD players on the market. The only thing it needs to make it the per

      Review: Toshiba HD-E1

By Rob Gillman, CNET.co.uk and Philip Wong, CNET Asia

Review summary: While it lacks advanced features and is very slow to respond, the HD-E1 is the first standalone high-definition movie player that feels and looks like a modern disc player.

Pros: Superb HD pictures; good DVD upscaling; slim design.

Cons: Lethargic operating times; not 1080p-compatible; no analog surround sound output.

      Toshiba HD-E1

Review summary: The first HD DVD player we've tested, this hi-def disc-spinner promises sensational picture and sound performance at a comparatively modest price

Pros: High-performance hi-def video. Awesome sound quality. Plays DVDs very well. Competitive price

Cons: Not as complete as it should be: lacks 1080p, internal audio decoding for HD DVD surround sound and more
