Supermini MPV cars seem such a good idea on paper. Easy to park, relatively practical and with a low cost of ownership, they seem the ideal urban companion, especially if you've got the needs of a young family to consider. The reality, however, is often a little less appealing with many cars considering a tin loaf as a suitable design inspiration. Fiat are rarely short of ideas when it comes to appealing small cars and with the explosion in MPV-style utility vehicles, it was only a matter of time before they slotted in a model beneath the Multipla. Although other rivals beat the Punto-based Idea to the punch, few can come anywhere close to its sense of fun and style. A used Idea may be a little tricky to track down, but if you want a small MPV-style vehicle but don't want to forgo a little personality, this is one Idea well worth furth...

"Factor in some very good engines, keen pricing and boosted equipment levels and you have a package that looks extremely tough to top?."

Just when you think you've seen it all, a car manufacturer will do something that completely surprises you. Naturally, some are a little less predictable than others but Fiat's second generation Idea model wasn't exactly what we were expecting. The drill for facelifting a car part way through its life is usually to revise the headlamps, tail lights and...

"?the driving characteristics are much as you'd expect from a Punto ' in other words lively but loveable"

Building a supermini, then creating a more versatile 'MPV' version of it is one of the current automotive fashions. Ford, Vauxhall, Hyundai and Renault can all offer you cars of this kind but none are what you'd call pretty. Much better looking is the alternative that many shopping in this market tend to ignore: Fiat's Idea. The 1.4-litre 16-valve petrol model that we look at here m...
