Kaamos

Album profile: Kaamos

Thomas Koner has become exceptionally sensitive to bass frequencies through his close observation of the reverberation of gongs. Comprising little more than sloping, sculpted bass, sustained tones, and white-noise drifts, his solo work is ambient in the purest and most profound sense. After several solo albums on the Barooni imprint, Koner, perhaps better known as half of dub-techno minimalist duo Porter Ricks, here joins the prestigious Mille Plateaux family. Glaciological metaphors are unavoidable when discussing Koner's music. Slow, stately, and singularly overwhelming, KAAMOS commences at the august pace of advancing Arctic ice masses. Much of the movement is in the bass, as mighty low-end vibrations crack the thick sound-strata of ambient ice and permafrost, setting into motion terra-forming processes of snow slides and avalanches. The turbulent, relentless magnitude of Koner's sound sculpting attains breathless heights of beauty, and the mesmerising power and majesty contained within "Tabula Smaragdina" and the three-part "Kaamos" is nothing less than awesome.
