This 1968 album was essentially their last, as founder and leader John Sebastian was to depart after its completion. EVERYTHING PLAYING has a relaxed, almost off-the-cuff feeling to it. Original member Zal Yanovsky was gone and his replacement, Jerry Yester, along with bass player Steve Boone and drummer Joe Butler all brought the first non-Sebastian originals to appear on a Lovin' Spoonful album. In Sebastian's shadow their songs are pleasant album cuts, clearly not sounding like chart-toppers and not released as singles. Sebastian's own "Six O'Clock" and "She Is Still A Mystery" were his last hits with the band (and the end of their days on the top forty).
