Clubs

Every different type of golf club has a different loft (loft referring to the angle of the club head). A different club angle will produce shots of varying height, trajectory and distance. As far as golf equipment goes, golf clubs are by far the most important pieces that you will buy.

The driver or wood, is the piece of golf equipment used to hit long distance shots down the fairway or straight off the tee. The driver club features a large and deep head which is angled to 'drive' the ball as far as possible. Many golfers have three or four different types of woods in their golf equipment bag.

Sometimes known as a 1-wood, this driver can drive the ball the farthest of all the clubs, though it is also the most difficult to master. Most golf clubs in any set of golf equipment are progressive in size: a 3-wood will send the ball farther than a 4 or 5-wood, for example. It is possible to buy woods up to 11, although these are fairly uncommon items of golf equipment as an iron may be better suited to the shot. Golfers will tend to select a driver and a 3, 4 and 5-wood for their favoured golf equipment.

Rescue woods or hybrid clubs are items of golf equipment becoming more popular all the time. These clubs fit well into beginners' golf equipment or those who are struggling with a full power driver or 3-wood. These types of golf club are fairly forgiving and allow progression up to the more difficult clubs. For those just starting out, consider a rescue wood before a titanium driver in a set of golf equipment.

Irons form a staple of any golf equipment set. These clubs are typically used for shots from the fairway onto the green and are excellent for lofting the ball out of the rough. Sometimes, irons may be used to tee off on shorter courses or those with a big dog-leg. Irons have smaller and thinner club heads meaning less power is delivered to the shot. They typically have a steeper angle as well. The number classification system is present on irons, with a higher number indicating a steeper angle. A 2 or 3-iron will have the shallowest angle, while 9 or 10-irons are great items of golf equipment for lofting the ball high and short. A selection of angles is normally found in any set of golf equipment.

Pitching and sand wedges are also common items of golf equipment. They count as irons and are used primarily for chipping the ball out of tough spots. These clubs are items of golf equipment for a difficult lie and many golfers will regard them as essential items in their golf equipment.

Putters are the final type of club you will find in golf equipment and are predominantly flat headed. They are items of golf equipment designed to gently roll the ball into the hole on the smooth grass of the green. Golf bags come in a number of designs and materials and are essential for any golfer to keep their golf equipment and golf accessories protected from the weather and easily to hand. Standing golf bags are quite easy to carry and feature extending legs, allowing them to stand on their own and hold golf equipment whilst you are playing. However, trolley golf bags are larger and have more storage space for golf equipment and golf accessories: they can be easily pulled along while out on the course. These are great for holding a lot of golf equipment and are typically more expensive than their standing counterparts. Simple over the shoulder golf equipment bags are available as well and tend to be the cheapest available. A golf bag is a very important piece of golf equipment, so choose wisely.

Golf ball quality is very important for the serious player. Having your own favoured type of golf balls included with your golf equipment is essential for many. Golf balls have small dimples across their surface, which increases turbulence in the area behind the ball as it flies. This enables it to move further than if it was a regular, non-dimpled ball. Simple golf balls are available cheaply, while the range does extend to expensive and professional use golf balls with a tungsten core designed for long distance shots. The golf ball is one of the most vital pieces of golf equipment for any player.

Tees are another essential item of golf equipment. A longer tee is suitable for woods and drivers and will position the ball further from the surface of the ground. However, these will break easily with repeated use and a beginner should perhaps consider a shorter tee more suited to iron use. A selection of wood and plastic tees are available and should be utilised as a standard part of your golf equipment. While wood tees lend an extra element of class to your golf equipment, plastic ones are usually cheaper and do the same job.

Materials

Golf clubs are typically made of alloy materials: some of these have been specially developed for use in golf clubs. Some golf clubs now utilise a composite graphite shaft. With drivers especially, it is important to have a light and strong club shaft, allowing more power to be delivered in the swing. Graphite composite shafts are an epoxy based composite, with the fibres making up around 60% of the volume of the shaft. Titanium alloys have become incredibly prevalent in drivers, especially, and many drivers will now be cast or forged entirely in titanium alloy, which is a very light and strong material. These items of golf equipment used to be extremely expensive but are now falling slowly in price.

Tungsten is also popular, although it is a much denser and heavier material than even steel - approximately 250% heavier per gram. However, this material is great for shifting weight balance in clubs to allow for the best possible weighting in order to achieve the best shots. It's also used in golf balls to weight them for further flight.

Clubs are also made from mild and stainless steels. Some stainless steel shafted clubs are reasonably cheap, while forged iron club heads are still popular, especially when plated in nickel to prevent rusting. Some mild steel types are made into very flexible clubs with excellent feel.

Pick your golf equipment from the feel and personal preference. Golf equipment and golf accessories are always a personal choice, although it is often constrained by budget. The materials used in golf equipment are constantly being refined and indeed the majority of new clubs and golf equipment is the product of many years' research and development. Accessories

Golf accessories are very popular when it comes to golf equipment for the casual player. Golf hats are available, as well as golf visors. These golf accessories are great for keeping your head dry and warm throughout the winter, but will also protect from the sun's glare during hot summers.
