Types of Bike available

Utility bike

A bike designed for commuting and everyday use. They will usually have durable middle to heavy weight frames. This type of bike will often have chain guards and rear and front mudguards to stop the rider from getting dirty, and it may even have some storage space.

Mountain bike

A bike designed for off road cycling and use over challenging terrain. They are made to be durable with high quality frames and very strong wheels. This type of bike generally has wide tyres with heavy tread, and cross wise handlebars to help the rider keep control against sudden jolts. It is not uncommon to find this type of bike with suspension systems to absorb impacts, and disc brakes for more effective stopping power.

Racing bike

A bike designed for competitive road racing. Racing bikes are generally more expensive and have frames made from precision materials that are designed to be light and strong. This type of bike is more aerodynamic than other styles of bike, and features drop handlebars to allow a rider to take a lower position for less wind resistance. Their tyres are narrow and have less tread than a mountain bike tyre. A racing bike is designed for cycling on smooth, even road surfaces.

Touring bike

A bike designed for long distance road journeys. Compared to a racing bike they are sturdier, enabling you to cycle for long distances. However, similar to racing bikes they sometimes have drop handlebars for less wind resistance. One significant difference is that touring bikes have baggage cleverly attached to the bike, allowing for supplies to be taken on tour. This type of bike also features a wide gear range for greater flexibility according to road conditions.

BMX

A bike designed for stunts and tricks. When used for tricks they often have a series of attachments that can allow standing on the bike frame in various places. This type of bike has very wide tyres with deep tread, and it only has a single gear ratio.

The Frame Design

Different bike frame styles are available for men and women. Women's bike frames usually feature a step through frame which allows them to mount or dismount the frame in a dignified way whilst wearing a skirt. This feature often weakens the structural integrity of the bike and is less common on professional bikes.

Another departure from the traditional bike frame types is the recumbent bicycle, which allows the rider to sit back in a chair with pedals at the front of the bike. This is an extremely aerodynamic form of bike frame although is often banned from competitions.

Suspension bike frames are becoming increasingly popular on commercial bikes, and refers to the system that absorbs impact from the wheels upon contact with the ground. Suspension is important for two reasons. Firstly, it keeps bike wheels in continuous contact with rough surfaces whilst cycling which can improve steering control, and secondly, it reduces the impact of bumpy surfaces on the rider and luggage. Suspension is usually found on mountain bikes. Suspension can either be based on a spring system or a pneumatic piston system.

Gears and Brakes

Bike gears were invented because human legs are more efficient at low cycling speeds, but aren't very effective when moving too slowly either. Human legs find it easier to put a lot of strength into a medium speed cycle than to put little strength into very fast cycling, which is why variable gears are so useful.

Generally, a utility bike will use a small number of cycle gears, such as three to eight widely spaced, whereas racing bikes have a greater number of gears with smaller differences between the gear ratios. Mountain bikes have even more, often between 15 to 33 gears, and can even include an extremely low 'granny gear' to climb steep hills. Selecting a lower cycling gear will allow easier progress on harder terrain at the expense of speed. Higher gears allow for more speed when cycling on smooth terrain.

Many bicycles have 'rim brakes'. These have friction pads that compress against the wheel rims to produce resistance. There are also internal hub brakes whereby friction brakes are contained inside the wheel hubs themselves, and also disc brakes, which have discs attached to the wheel. Disc brakes are more similar to car breaking systems, and are generally the most efficient cycle brake.

Brakes are generally triggered by a cable system that starts at the handlebars and runs down towards the wheels. The cables are known as 'Bowden cables' although some bikes use a more advanced hydraulic breaking system. Some racing bikes will lack brakes because they are only used on a track so they are never expected to be required to stop suddenly.

Steering and seating

There are typically three styles of steering on a modern bike: upright handlebars, drop handlebars and straight handlebars. Upright handlebars are very common and popular on general-purpose bikes. They curve back towards the rider so that they can be grasped from an upright sitting position. Drop handlebars are featured on racing and touring cycle models and curve forward and down. They are designed so that the rider can steer from a crouched position with less wind resistance. Mountain bikes tend to have straight handlebars that provide greater leverage for turning on difficult terrain and also greater general control.

Saddles are generally less complicated, ranging from very slim ones for practical bikes to wider ones designed with comfort in mind. The recumbent bike has a seat that will support the entire body of the cyclist. Additionally, saddles are sometimes classed as being suitable for men or women, differing to offer maximum comfort for each body type.

Accessories and Size

Accessories

There are different types of tyres for different types of bikes. Generally, bikes for uneven terrain such as BMX and mountain bikes will have wider tyres for greater stability, shock absorption and control. Racing and touring bikes tend to have slimmer tyres with less tread, allowing for less friction on surfaces that are less uneven and unpredictable.

Other accessories include mudguards which are designed to stop the spray of mud hitting the rider. Some bikes will allow the fitting of a kickstand to make the bike stand upright whilst not in use and metal nuts can be attached to BMX bikes to allow for stunts.

Locks are naturally an important part of keeping your bike secure, and types available include chain and padlocks, or D-ring bike-locks that can be very effective. It is possible to get baggage that is specifically made for bikes, usually for touring bikes.

Of course, cycle helmets are always important and have become lighter and stronger as technology has improved.

Size

Unfortunately not all manufacturers use the same sizing guide for their bikes, so it is a good idea to try and test a bike before you buy it. If buying online you should ensure that it is easy to return the bike if there is a misunderstanding or any sizing issues.

Bikes sizes are determined by the actual size of the frame; usually the length of the seat tube. Many manufacturers measure this from the pedalling axel to the top of the seat tube. However, not all manufacturers measure from these points, which can make sizing misleading.

Whilst manufacturers tend to state the length of the seat tube, the rest of the frame also increases proportionally between sizes. Some manufacturers also explain their sizing in simpler terms such as small, medium and large, and because of this it is always a good idea to try before you buy.

Other common variations include women's bikes, men's bikes and children's bikes, and also speciality bikes such as folding, and compact, and electric bikes that also come in different sizes.
