Making a choice

Maybe you're taking your first steps in the world of DIY. Perhaps you're already a seasoned home improvement veteran or a professional tradesperson. Whatever your level of experience, whether you need a

basic drill or an entire workbench, you're going to want good power tools to get on with the job at hand. From drills to sanders and everything in between, the choice can be bewildering. There are several manufacturers to choose from, ranging from well-known brands like Bosch and Black & Decker to lesser known, and more specialised companies. Even if you're looking to pick up an inexpensive cordless drill you'll find yourself presented with a wealth of choice.

Each year, Bosch launches around 100 new power tools on the market. And that's just Bosch. Altogether there are thousands of power tools to choose from. Before buying your power tools, ask yourself what you want them for. If you're looking to put up a few shelves at home, you don't need to buy a top-of-the-range Bosch Impact drill. Similarly you need to know exactly what tools you'll require to complete the job. Take the task of putting up a shelf - before you pick up your drill, you're going to need a detector to ensure you don't drill through that cable you had no idea was hidden in the wall! Guess what? Bosch makes three different detectors. Research the tools you'll need to complete the job, and make sure you know what you're looking for before you take your first steps into the world of power tools.

Drills

Chances are that if you're considering buying power tools you're going to want a drill. Which drill is right for you, though? Your first consideration will probably be cord or cordless. Do you want a compact cordless drill like the Bosch GSR+10.8-2-LI, or does your job require a heavy duty corded drill like the Bosch BH2000RE? Consider how long you'll be using your drill for at any one time. Cordless drills allow you to move around without having to run extension cables behind you, but even the newest Bosch models are going to need charging after a relatively short time. Corded drills are more powerful on the whole, so if you're looking to drill a lot of holes in tough surfaces, you're probably going to want a corded drill. For basic DIY tasks, though, you can't beat the convenience of a cordless drill.

Bear in mind that there are several different types of drill. For example if you're going to be working with masonry you might want to consider hammer drills, which - as the name suggests - combine a hammer action with a drill action to make short work of tougher materials. If you need to drill holes in tight spaces, you'll need an angle drill such as the Bosch GWI 10.8 V-LI, which has a 9.5cm adjustable head and is small enough to use in the tightest of spaces. For really heavy jobs, like drilling holes in concrete, you'll need a powerful SDS drill. Advances in drill technology mean that you can now get cordless as well as cordless versions of these drills.

Saws

Why sweat over cutting that plank of wood to the right size when you can slice your way though it with a power saw? The saw

drill may be the king of power tools, but the saw runs it a close second. As with drills, your choice of power saw will depend on what you intend using it for. The most common types of power saw are the mitre saw, the jig saw and the circular saw.

Most makes of circular saw come with interchangeable blades designed for cutting different materials. A circular saw like the Bosch GKS 55 should suffice for most jobs around the house. It's one of Bosch's most compact models, yet it still packs an impressive 1200watt motor. If you need to cut particularly tough or thick materials, though, you'll need to go for a larger corded model.

Mitre saws are used to make cross cuts in wood and other materials. These mounted saws can run you a pretty penny, but there are some very decent mid-price mitres such as the Bosch PCM 8 S.

For more intricate cuts, you'll need a jig saw. The beauty of the jigsaw lies in the fact that you can use it to saw in the middle of a material. Simply drill a hole where you want to start sawing, and slide your jig saw blade in. Most jig saws utilise a number of different blades. If you buy a Bosch model, you can pick up a variety of Bosch blade packs for less than £10 each.

Sanders

So you've got your drill and you're ready to saw your piece of wood to the perfect length for that shelf you've been planning on putting up. Now you're going to want to make sure your shelf has a nice finish. You need a sander. Power sanders aren't only used for giving wood a smooth finish, though. They can also wipe out rust and remove varnish. As with drills and saws there's a wide choice of sanders to suit every job and material. Bear in mind that sanding can create a lot of dust, so if you don't want to spend the time sweeping up after you've sanded, make sure you buy a model with a dust extraction system.

While there are a variety of different sanders to complete different jobs, you may want to opt for a multi-sander such as the Bosch PSM 18 LI cordless or even a multi-function tool like the Bosch PMF 10.8 LI cordless, which combines saw, cutter and sander in one extremely portable device. However, sometimes the job is too big for a multi-sander and you'll need a dedicated, more powerful device such as the Bosch PBS 7 A Belt Sander which is capable of stripping large areas in fast time. Remember though, belt sanders aren't designed for making surfaces look nice, they're there to help you prepare your surface for further work. If you want to achieve nice sanded finishes you'll need an orbital sander or a random orbital sander and if you want to sand in tight spaces you'll need a device like the Bosch PDA 180 E Delta sander.

Other tools and accessories

A good drill, a saw and a multi-function cutting and sanding tool will probably form the foundation of any DIY enthusiast's tool box. But inevitably there are times when you need more than a drill to get the job done. From electric screwdrivers to diamond-tipped cutting tools - there is a power tool for just about any job you can think of. Most tools also come with a variety of accessories. Take a tour around the Bosch website and you'll be presented with thousands of options. Your drill, for example, might be capable of drilling a hole in a variety of materials, but you'll need to buy a drill bit to suit the task. And it's not just a simple matter of buying a drill bit to cut through metal or plastic. Bosch manufactures a host of different metal drill bits. Make sure you take the time to find out exactly what tools and accessories you'll need to complete the job at hand.

Don't necessarily feel you have to go for the most expensive power tools either. That Bosch PSB 1000-2 RCE Impact drill might look the business, and it is indeed a great tool for the experienced DIY enthusiast, but if you're just looking to do the odd job around the house, you'll probably be better off going for something like the Bosch PSR 14.4-Volt cordless drill. It costs a lot less and will be perfect for screwing together wardrobes or putting up shelves.
