Flooding a room with light
If you need a general and uniform illumination, opt for a ceiling light that creates a bright central source. It allows you to evenly illuminate a large room and its light is moderately diffused in space.There are various types of ceiling lights: You have a choice among the embedded lamps, ideal for the bathrooms, the chandelier for a more traditional decor, the lamp-integrated ceiling ventilators or the light rails. The rails allow you to install several bulbs and add a modern touch to your decor.

You can also choose from a variety of wall lamps to provide general lighting in much smaller spaces such as the corridors or the staircases.

Brighten up your reading
If you wish to be able to light up a particular area of your room or if you need light for a specific purpose, then choose a lamp which you can move or direct according to your needs. The floor lamps are particularly suited for dark angles. With a lamp-shade fabric, they are an ideal choice for the living room. For working or reading, choose a directional lamp which provides a direct lighting. Their lamp-shade should be light-coloured.

The table lamps are ideal for a living room or a bedroom. With plain or patterned lampshades, wood, metal or acrylic body, all styles are available to suit your decor.

The art of lighting up your objects
These lamps are used to emphasise specific areas or highlight the items of decoration. They are increasingly used to light up works of art (a sculpture) and decorative objects (e.g. a vase). There are wall lamps which are specially designed for your paintings.

Certain lamps are more functional and allow you to light up the library, shelves or wardrobes. The halogen spotlights in particular, belong to this category. You can find articulated models as well, which allows the movement of light to specific areas.

Depending on where you place these lamps, you get direct lighting (by directing the source of light towards the object) or indirect lighting (by directing light to a surface that reflects light).

Decoration before everything else
Deco lamps are not intended to illuminate. They add a touch to your interior design. The lava lamps, for example, the light bricks or the decorative LED chains are objects of decoration to have in the room or the living room for a trendy look. Do not forget the Christmas tinsels which illuminate the festivals.

From Watts to LEDs: Everything you need to know

Let there be light: Power and intensity
Power is expressed in Watt which indicates the power consumption of the lamp. The higher the wattage, the higher the electricity consumed. The maximum power supported by the lamp must be indicated. Do not confuse electricity consumption with light intensity. The latter is a measure of light output expressed in lumen (or lux). In general, we recommend 100 luxes for an entrance and 500 luxes for reading.

Economy or Colour: The type of bulb
The incandescent bulbs are the traditional kinds; they spread a warm light, but consume a lot of energy. The halogen lamps on the other hand, diffuse clearer and higher intensity light than the glowing lamps. The compact fluorescent lamps are low energy light bulbs. Their light is softer and suitable for general lighting. Avoid turning these lamps on and off too often to ensure a good lifespan for their bulbs.

LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are bulbs which consume less energy and have a longer lifespan. Unlike fluorescent lamp, they are not affected by frequent ignitions.
They are available in various colours.

The smart option: Mobile joints
The lamps can be either steered or fixed. Some are articulated, such as the reading lamps. There are also spotlights, which can redirect the light to a particular element.

The details that will make the difference

Choice between fixed and movable
There are lamps which are fixed to a location, such as sconces and chandeliers, and there are others which can be moved, such as floor lamps, bedside lamps or table lamps.

Touch deco: colour and material
Be it the body or the shade of the lamp, there are a whole range of materials to compliment your interior decoration. Body of wood or brushed metal, shade opaque or transparent, canvas or glass, there is something for every taste. The translucent glass filters bright and direct light. The opaque fabric on the contrary absorbs the light and offers softer lighting.

Accessories

No more getting up! The remote controls
Usually supplied with the lamps at the time of purchase, remotes are the ultimate practical accessories. They enable you to turn the light on and off without moving.

Subdued or bright light: The Dimmers
These are the devices that allow their users to turn on the light and vary its intensity. Easy to install, they are mounted in place of the switch. The dimmers with a cursor function like the traditional switches. Each time you press the button, the intensity varies. Others have a rotary system: you turn the controller to obtain the desired intensity. Finally, there are the tactile ones which are designed to respond to the feather touch of a finger and are generally compatible with remote controls.

Economic and clever: The timers
They can limit the duration of ignition of a lamp. After a period of time, the lights dim. It is an ideal solution to save energy and not having to think about turning off the lights when you leave. Use them in the crossing points, such as the staircases.

Brighten up the place you walk: Motion detectors
The light turns on when you pass in front of these detectors. They are extremely practical for the cellar or the corridor.

Finding themselves in the dark:Light-indicator switches
Other than being functional accessories, these devices avoid you groping around in the dark. You will find mural models or wall switches, equipped with a fluorescent touch pad that is adaptable to the living room lights or the bedside lamps.

Need a change? The lamp-shades
You can replace the lamp-shade of your lamps on your own to make them blend with your decoration. Change the colours, choose patterns, vary the textures and the forms and transform a lamp in a flash to give it a new appearance.
