Introduction

Choosing the right perfume is a big decision with thousands of different scents, shapes and sizes available in perfume shops today. Perfumes are one of the most frequently purchased gifts in the world - perfect for all those special occasions during the course of the year, ranging from Christmas, birthdays, to anniversaries and Valentine's Day. But in order to find that special scent, you need to consider the many different types of fragrances before making that all-important decision.

When visiting a perfume shop, you also need to contemplate that a perfume is a highly personal product - it is therefore vital to match the essence you choose with the type of person you are buying for, to make sure the perfume correctly fits their age and lifestyle. This will often require a process of trial and error before a final decision is made. It is therefore a good idea to buy some cheap testers before splashing the cash.

Although the different types of perfume may seem bewildering to someone who is an unfamiliar visitor to a perfume shop, there are only four main types of perfume to choose from: Perfume (or Parfum), Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Cologne.

Understanding perfume

When buying a perfume, you will often find a list of the notes and tones that the product brings to mind; in other words the smell that stays with the spray. The aromas of the different types of ingredients contained in the perfume are separated into three separate layers, called top notes, middle notes and base notes.

The top notes are the first scent to be perceived but they evaporate immediately, before the middle notes make their mark. The second layer then becomes more profound and the middle notes generally make up the main body of the perfume. The base notes last the longest of the three layers, and provide the perfume with its full character - the scent is created once the notes mix with the person's pH balance and body chemistry.

Fragrance categories

Every person has their own signature fragrance, but that does not necessarily mean they need to wear the same perfume every day. It all really depends on the type of occasion, weather and time. For example, lighter and cooler fragrances work best in the daytime and summer months, whereas warmer, more sensual scents are better for evening wear and special occasions.

The five major categories in perfumes to look out for are: floral, fruity, woody, greens and oriental.

Floral perfumes are ideal for women who want to feel pretty and feminine, with strong overtones of flowery fragrances suitable for all ages and occasions. The types of ingredients you can expect to find with floral perfumes are rose, jasmine and lavender aromas - examples include Calvin Klein Escape and Anaïs Anaïs by Cacharel.

If that does not whet your appetite, then perhaps a fruity perfume is the way forward. These perfumes add a little bit of flair for the sophisticated party girl; giving her a vibrant, show-stopping scent ready for the night on the town. Particular favourites in the fruit range include DKNY Be Delicious and Champagne by Yves Saint Laurent.

Woody fragrances attract the more mature lady who wants to feel fresh and maintain an aura or sophistication. These perfumes have an earthy tone to them, making them more versatile than any other in the perfume shop. Notes such as sandalwood, patchouli and cedar are given off by these woody fragrances. The famous Chanel No.19 is a perfect example, alongside Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker.

Meanwhile, green perfumes are the number one choice for young, sporty personalities. This type of perfume will capture the essence of the earth's greenery, resembling freshness of spring flowers. This perfume is an extremely light, refreshing fragrance that is suitable for the spring and summer months. Here, you would want to be looking at something like Charlie by Revlon or Diorissimo by Christian Dior.

The strongest of all the perfumes on the market, however, is the oriental perfume. This aroma evokes sensual overtones, perfect for evening events and special occasions. You can expect to smell scents like vanilla and oriental resins in this category. The best example in the oriental range at the moment is Chanel's Chance fragrance.

When deciding on a male perfume, you need to consider his type of personality and the type of lifestyle he leads. Male perfumes tend to fall into the categories of masculine, power, cool, musky and fresh. And some of the best types of male fragrance include citrus, green and woody.

Citrus scents as the name suggests, are mainly citrus and fruits oils based. This includes the likes of orange, lemon, peach, lime and apricot, such as the Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford and Hugo Boss in Motion, which both start off as a citrus scent and develop into a deep woody scent. Another similar example is Vintage Black by Kenneth Cole - a masculine, powerful scent that starts as citrus and ends up as a deep musky smell.

Green perfumes and aftershaves have a fresher yet more intense scent. This is down to aromas such as green leaves and essence of cut grass being added to the mix. A touch of fresh green notes will make the aftershave feel crisp, but a predominance of these notes will make the fragrance feel cool and refreshing.

Water fragrances are another one of the lightest and brightest fragrances in the range, and are dominated by water notes such as sea air, water and fresh water plants. They are often mixed with fresh citrus and fruit tones of green leaves, such as Cool Water Deep by Davidoff.

The variety of fragrances

Depending on your budget and personal preferences, perfume (parfum) prices can be very high. However, this is the most popular choice because you really do get your money's worth - perfume contains the most fragrance and a small amount goes an extremely long way.

On the other hand, Eau de Parfum is another popular choice with consumers, and comes second in strength and durability. Eau de Toilette is also popular but the scents do not last as long as the other two. And although Eau de Cologne is the cheapest option, it holds the smallest concentration of fragrance and fades much more quickly.

Another factor to take into consideration is the type of bottle and packaging of the perfume. The scent is obviously the deciding factor, but what about its attractiveness and shape, and would your recipient like to see the bottle on their dressing room table? For example, the Touch of Pink Lacoste bottle is perfect for the 'girly' girl, while the Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male with a masculine shaped body bottle is ideal for the muscular man.
