Making a choice

Welcome to our buying guide for batteries, your perfect partner in deciding what batteries you need to power your home and electrics. Whatever you need batteries for, be it your laptop, remote control or mobile, we can help you to find, research and compare all your options by showcasing batteries from retailers around the UK.

We want you to be sure you are getting the right battery for the job which is why we have a huge selection for you to compare. After you've decided what you're going to be using your batteries for it's not just a case of switching to auto pilot and picking anything off the shelf. There are several different types of batteries which have varying levels of performance and lifespan. Certain types do very different things and it's important to know what you are getting and what it is capable of. This guide will take you through the different types of batteries available on the market so you know which is perfect for what you want to do. Just be sure you know exactly what sort of performance and lifespan you want to get out of your batteries before you make a purchase otherwise you will end up disappointed and that is the last thing we want.

Alkaline and Zinc

Alkaline batteries are perhaps your best bet if you are looking for something that is going to last a long time. These can have up to six times more life in them than your standard zinc carbon batteries whether you use them all the time or on an irregular basis. This makes this type of battery perfect if you are using them in appliances that burn a lot of power because you won't have to keep replacing them all the time. You can also get rechargeable alkaline batteries which can usually be charged about 50 times, although with certain makes the sky is the limit, and once charged some will allow you to leave them lying around for a number of years before being used. These are just as good as regular alkaline batteries with the benefit of being reusable, although be sure to get an alkaline battery charger or you will have problems.

Zinc Chloride batteries work on a similar level to alkaline models with the added bonus of costing significantly less than most long-life alkaline batteries. They even have a better lifespan than regular zinc carbon batteries. The only drawback is they are not so good on appliances that use up a lot of juice so be sure not to slip anything in to high performance and leave it on auto for several hours or you may find yourself having to make another purchase sooner than you wanted.

Nickel

There are two different types of nickel batteries: nickel metal hydride and nickel cadmium. But although they are different in principle they can both be used for the same types of appliances, it is just the features of each battery that differ. Nickel batteries are the sort you will be looking at for a range of household items ranging from power tools and handheld vacuum cleaners to digital video camera and notebook computers, mobile phones and pagers to remote controls and emergency lighting. You can pretty much guarantee that most of the items in your house run off nickel batteries or have the capability to. So what's the difference between the two you say?

Well nickel metal hydride batteries are more for high performance items. They can deliver about twice the capacity of nickel cadmium batteries, a high energy density and have up to 3C high rate discharge, which is better than most of the competition. They are also among the most reliable on the market, have safety mechanisms which mean if the battery is abused or misused it is protected from damage, and can operate at a wide spectrum of temperatures, from as low as minus 20C to a scorching 60C which is very handy when travelling with a device in extreme weather conditions. Not having any mercury, cadmium or lead also makes them better for the environment and depending on how you use them they can perform about 300 to 1,000 charge and discharge cycles. Meanwhile the nickel cadmium batteries have a similar reliability, safety measures and lifespan, and they charge at a high rate which means if you run out of juice it won't be long before you are up and running again.

And finally...

The last two types of battery on the list are silver oxide and lithium ion batteries. The first of these, silver oxide, have a stable power supply and high operating voltage because of the materials used in them. The silver oxide is the positive element, whilst zinc is the negative active material, with potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte. Silver oxide batteries are among the best in high performance, draining applications, such as video cameras, and the consistent voltage that they provide is a key factor in this.

If you are looking for something with a little more power than the Nickel batteries available but is still reasonably environmentally friendly then look no further than lithium ion. These contain none of the toxic metals such as lead or mercury that you will find in some of the other batteries and are about the same weight as the nickel competition. With a higher voltage it is important not to overload electronic equipment that you are using lithium ion batteries on, but fortunately the built-in graphite type negative electrode controls release of volts to avoid any unwanted incidents. With the convenience of being fully charged in under two hours a lithium ion battery may be just the thing you are looking for.

Recharging

Some people have an issue with rechargeable batteries for some reason but if you get good quality ones then there is no reason they can't do anything non-rechargeable ones can. Different types of rechargeable batteries are available and they can be used for a wide range of appliances, and with certain ones such as video cameras they are essential these days.

The best sort of rechargeable batteries, are those with a high milliampere hour (mAh) rating. This figure determines how much electricity your battery will be pumping into a device at any one time but you need to make sure you appliance can handle the level of mAh in the battery you buy, otherwise you could do some damage. Of course the higher the mAh the higher the price, but as with any electronic device a better performance is always going to cost more.

One final thing to mention is the sort of charger you buy for your rechargeable batteries. A lot of rechargeable batteries will come as a set with a charger, but it is possible to get a better level of performance from each battery if you shop around for a new one; it just depends on how far you are willing to go and much use you expect to get out of it. Try to get one that can charge batteries of all shapes and sizes and to prevent your batteries from becoming overcharged, which is a very real possibility, look for a system with a reconditioning cycle. This will be an auto feature on some but for others it is an option that can be used at your will.
