Introduction

it is difficult to remember what our lives were like before mobile phones took them over, although I suppose they were much like they are now except people actually had to trust each other to meet in a certain place without a check up phone call beforehand.

Nowadays, we couldn't live without our phones, and the wide range of mobile phone accessories available only serves to enhance our love of these ubiquitous devices. Now, not only can we carry our mobile phones wherever we need to, we can keep them fully charged, protect them from scratches and scrapes and even do other things while using them.

The general principle of mobile phone accessories is to make the functions of the device more accessible. For example, instead of requiring a mains power source to charge your mobile phone, you can use the cigarette lighter of a car to charge the device using power from the car's battery, or even use a miniature solar panel to harness the sun's rays.

With many modern mobile phone devices coming with add ons and accessories thrown in as part of the bundle, you'd be forgiven for thinking that sales of peripheral devices for mobile phones would be dwindling. This is not the case, as the accessories sold individually often turn out to be better quality than the free add ons.

Hands-free kits

Hands-free kits are one of the most common pieces of mobile phone paraphernalia. They are fairly explanatory bits of kit; put simply, any device which allows you to use your mobile phone remotely, without actually touching it, is a hands-free device.

Commonly used by busy people without a free hand to take a phone call, hands-free kits graduated from a simple pair of headphones with a microphone and a volume control on wire, to more sophisticated Bluetooth headsets, which use short range wireless technology to transmit calls to a small ear piece.

Using a Bluetooth headset eliminates the need for an inconvenient wire, giving the device a much neater and more professional appearance. However, this causes problems of its own. Because there is no wire and because the headset requires a power source, Bluetooth hands-free devices require an onboard battery. This makes it slightly heavier than a normal set of headphones and means that it requires charging.

Consequently, it is advisable to choose a Bluetooth headset with a long battery life - preferably up to 9 hours of talk time and 300 hours standby time - this will allow you to take full advantage of the freedom offered by Bluetooth technology.

More expensive devices will be more lightweight and will come with specially engineered clips to fit comfortably over the ear. These models can be worth the extra pennies if you plan to use the headset for prolonged amounts of time.

In-car hands-free kits

Police in the UK recently began a clampdown on the use of mobile phones whilst driving. This followed high profile research into the effect that such usage has on reaction times and hazard perception, two key aspects of operating a motor vehicle.

The ban not only prevents drivers from using their phones in a traditional sense - i.e. picking up a mobile phone to answer or make a call while driving - but also forbids the use of hands-free kits and Bluetooth headsets.

Consequently, to use your mobile phone while driving you must use a specifically designed Bluetooth device that transfers calls straight to loudspeaker, requiring no manual interaction with the mobile phone device. Failure to comply with these criteria can result in a fine of £2,500 and three penalty points.

Many users baulk at the idea of transferring all their calls to speakerphone because of the poor quality of sound offered by mobile phone loudspeakers. Higher end models attempt to bypass this problem by using digital signal processing technology, also known as DSP. DSP enhances audio quality by eliminating echo and reducing noise in playback.

Portability

With portability being the primary selling point of a mobile phone, accessories which enhance this are always going to be popular. The primary barrier to the portability of mobile phones is battery life. With the rise of smartphones, and the battery sapping apps that come with them, accessories that can prolong battery life are in high demand.

Of course these accessories do not physically prolong battery life, but can prolong the usage time of a mobile phone by allowing users to charge up their devices whilst out and about. The most common of these charging devices uses the cigarette lighter in a car to charge the mobile phone's battery.

These charging devices are almost universally compatible as most modern cars utilise the same cigarette lighter sockets. However, the enormous variations in mobile phone charger connections, means it is vital to check that the charger comes with an attachment that fits your mobile phone.

Many chargers will come with a selection of different connections that fit onto an adapter. These connections will be compatible with the most commonly used mobile phone brands and models, allowing households using different mobile phones to charge their devices from the same source. However, more obscure brands and models of mobiles may require a separate connector to be purchased directly from the manufacturer.

Other mobile phone chargers are available which use solar energy to charge the mobile phone's battery. These are equipped with a miniature solar panel and can be useful if out hiking or on any sort of expedition which takes you away from a power source.

Models of solar chargers are available which connect directly to the phone via the regular charger connection, while others charge the battery directly within the solar unit. The same compatibility issues apply to these sorts of chargers.

Conclusion

Compatibility is the prime concern when selecting accessories for your mobile phone. The vast array of different charging devices and connectors produced by manufacturers is designed to keep you locked in to their brand, bound by the fact that the unique connector required is only available from them.

Because of this, it is vital to check that any physical connections will fit your device, and that any wireless or Bluetooth connections are supported by your phone.

Furthermore, if you are buying an accessory to allow you to use your phone while driving, be absolutely certain that the kit you are buying fits the legal remit. Failure to comply with this can result in the loss of your license, or worse, a serious accident.

Remember, it is only legal to operate your phone when driving if the hands-free kit does not require a headset and no manual operation is required to take a call. Be certain that the hands-free kit allows this before purchase.
