Introduction

The rise of the MP3 player blew the personal music player scene wide open. Since the arrival of the Sony Walkman in the 1980s, people have been able to venture out of their front doors and listen to their music collections out in the big wide world. Since then, manufacturers have been searching for smaller, lighter, more efficient ways to transport a pleasurable listening experience to the great outdoors.

With the arrival of MP3 players came renewed potential; all of a sudden, rather than listening to a shiny compact disc that skipped whenever you broke into a run, or a tape that chewed itself up after a few months of service, users could have the choice of literally thousands of tracks at the touch of a button.

Companies were quick to take advantage of these expanded possibilities and unleashed wave after wave of accessories and peripherals onto the unsuspecting public. These peripherals ranged from headphones to help you listen to music on the move and cases to keep your device secure while doing so, to docks and cables to turn your MP3 player into a pocket sized HiFi system.

As with all audio devices, sound quality is paramount, so it is important to ensure you are getting the best possible bang for your buck. And this might not necessarily mean buying the most expensive bit of kit available.

Headphones

The first thing to think about when choosing headphones is the purpose. Chunky, 'premiership footballer' type headphones might sound amazing when enjoying music on the bus or a walk to the shop, but are likely to become cumbersome when leaping around on a full run, or jogging away on a treadmill. On the other hand, a tiny pair of bud headphones is not likely to provide the optimum listening experience.

Consequently, if you are choosing MP3 player headphones for a particularly strenuous activity, for example to accompany you during marathon training, the choice is always going to be a compromise between sound quality and practicality. In-ear headphones - also known as IEMs, or in-ear monitors - can overcome this difficulty by settling securely and snugly in the ear, although it is advised to experiment with different sized ear-tips to find one that fits the inside of your ear like a proverbial glove. A snug fit also gives a better bass response and a richer sound.

However, if like Didier Drogba and Cesc Fabregas, you are after a beautiful-sounding and stylish pair of headphones for your MP3 player, then sound-reproduction and clarity are your primary concerns. Look out for the size of the driver unit, as a large driver unit - of about 50 mm - will provide the strength required to deliver the thick bass of club and hip-hop music.

Alternatively, those who wish to use their MP3 players in areas with substantial background noise - such as on an airplane or in a busy household - should look for noise-cancellation headphones. These headphones negate the noise around them to ensure an unadulterated listening experience. Ratings are usually given in a percentage - the higher the better - referring to the level of noise they blot out.

Cases

If you shell out x-amount of cash for a nice, shiny, high-quality MP3 player, the last thing you want is for it to get scuffed or otherwise damaged. This is particularly likely if the MP3 device is being used whilst running or playing sport, so in these circumstances, adequate protection is a must.

The first concern when buying an MP3 case is to make sure that it fits your MP3 player. This may seem blindingly obvious, but with the market completely saturated with MP3 devices of all shapes and sizes, it's important to be sure. Many cases for sale will have a list of brand and model numbers that the case fits somewhere on the packaging, so be sure to read these details thoroughly before purchase. If purchasing online, contact the vendor and verify this information before buying your MP3 player case.

Secondly, you must ask yourself what are the harshest conditions you are likely to use your MP3 player in. If the answer is "a bit of rain walking to and from the office, but it'll be in my coat pocket anyway", then a simple silicon skin to protect the MP3 player's chassis from scuffs and scratches and a temporary plastic screen-protector film to provide an anti-glare cover for the screen should suffice.

Alternatively, if the answer is "splattered with mud and rain on a cross country run", then you may want something a bit more heavy duty. Look for a thicker silicon case which will cushion the MP3 player against any sudden shocks or impacts, or an arm strap to hold the device securely to your person.

Docks and speakers

It is likely that there will come a time when privately listening to music just isn't appropriate or convenient; if you have friends round or simply desire the freedom of listening to music without being hooked up to a headphone wire then an MP3 player dock or set of speakers will be right up your street.

The two major factors that help to decide which dock to go for are compatibility and sound-quality. As far as compatibility is concerned, you simply need to check the model number of your device against the product's compatibility list. Most of the big players in the MP3 game - Apple and Sony for example - produce their own, self-compatible dock units, so if you have an Apple iPod MP3 player, it is unlikely to be compatible with anything other than a dock made by its parent brand.

If your MP3 player is not compatible with a docking system, then all hope is not lost; most portable speakers are compatible with MP3 players, providing they are equipped with a 3.5mm jack lead. This lead fits into the MP3 player's headphone socket and transmits music to the speaker system.

The spec sheet of a speaker can be a daunting prospect; so many pieces of information, much of it apparently useless. The key piece of information to look for is the sensitivity, usually presented as a decibel rating. This is the volume in decibels produced from one watt of power picked up by a microphone placed one metre away from the speaker. A higher rating represents a more efficient speaker; a rating of 87 db or above is what to look out for.

Similarly, a large set of on-ear headphones which fully encompass the ears and feature a solid drive unit are going to produce a far better sound quality than a pair of in-ear buds or smaller headphones which clip over the ear; but the smaller headphones are going to offer your far more comfort in the gym than the on-ear phones which won't remain 'on-ear' for very long.

The first thing to do before venturing out to buy accessories is compile a quick checklist of what you need and expect from your MP3 player and its peripherals. Then you can check this list against the product's specifications, ensuring that you purchase the perfect accessory for your usage.
