Factors to Consider when Buying Keyboards

Typically, ergonomic keys are angled so that the hands will sit in a more natural position to the human form, making typing easier, faster and more comfortable. The most basic of ergonomic keyboards have a simple fixed or adjustable V split, which groups the keys to a more natural angle. Some ergonomic keyboards have vertically aligned keys, and some are even contoured or ‘tented’ in the centre, so that you can adjust the position to a natural stance for your hands. These can sometimes be quite pricey, but for great value for money and effectiveness, we would recommend the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, with prices starting from around £35.

It is possible to buy a keyboard that has specific features over and above being able to input a variety of data. For example, durability is an important issue and some keyboards go the extra mile by being spill-proof and waterproof so it isn’t going to be the end of the world if you accidentally knock your coffee over it. Other keyboards are dust resistant and will repel fingerprints so your work surface looks cleaner. Others are tough enough to withstand being dropped, which is an important factor to consider if you take your keyboard with you to work on-the-go. Some manufacturers even make flexible, waterproof roll-up keyboards, making them extra portable and safe from spills or splashes.

We have an extensive range for anybody’s needs. There are very simple models, which have the basic QUERTY keypad, numerical pad and some standard Windows shortcuts. More complex models have touch-pads and track-pads incorporated to eliminate the use of a mouse. Some of the ergonomic keyboards are angled to put the least amount of strain on your hands and wrists.

If you are into gaming, then a specialized gaming keyboard with heavily weighted and cushioned keys, additional programmable functionality, cool backlighting and LCD displays would be ideal. They are often designed to be more hardwearing for prolonged usage, which is more typical of a gamer than someone who uses their keyboard for typing. Some also have multimedia controls, so that you don’t need to interrupt your game in order to control your MP3 player, for example.

So which is the best gaming keyboard? Logitech, Microsoft, Razer and Saitek are all popular choices for video game players. One of the most impressive models is the Saitek Cyborg, it houses 12 special programmable “Cyborg” keys and backlighting which indicates five different colour coded zones which highlight the main gaming keys. Although a little cumbersome, this keyboard is great value for the functionality. Logitech is another favourite, but if you are looking for something a little sleeker with more style, then the Razer Black Widow would be for you. Its super cool red backlighting and rubber coated keys not only give it a luxury feel but it has the functionality to boot. With 10 programmable keys and 32kb memory to store your settings, you can take the Razer Black Widow anywhere and your settings will be maintained. With USB ports as well as the standard audio sockets, this is a cool gadget - more expensive than other options on the market - but well worth the money.

Keyboard Sizes and Connectivity

It is not always very easy or comfortable to type quickly or accurately if you have a touch-screen device such as a tablet PC or Smartphone. Luckily, there are a few new products on the market which solve that problem. The Logitech have produced a slimline, Bluetooth keyboard compatible with the iPad. It comes with a protective case which conveniently doubles up as a nifty stand to hold your iPad. Apple of course offers a wireless iPad Keyboard Dock which neatly charges your iPad while you type! Prices for the iPad dock start from around £55.

If your Smartphone is basically your substitute laptop or tablet, there are some cute compact keyboards on the market for an absolute bargain! With Bluetooth connectivity, they are compatible with most Smartphones and tablets, and extremely portable. Xenta and ZAGG have some great solutions for both iOS and Android devices, such as the ZaggKeys Solo keyboard, which starts from around £65.
