Buying Guide - Watches

Style Types

Watches have been worn for many years as both a functional timepiece and as a status symbol. This hasn't changed much in the 21^st century.

A typical dress watch is usually gold and is fairly thin. This type of watch isn't ostentatious and tends to be quite streamlined. A standard business watch will be gold, stainless steel or titanium, and will tell the time and possibly the date and normally not anything else. Women's formal or dress watches typically have much more decoration on them than men's watches. Formal or business watches do not possess the range of modern features now common in aviation or sports watches.

Often, cut gemstones are embedded into the bezel or the crown of the watch. Cheaper watches will emulate this with cut glass designed to look like gemstones on the bezel or the face of the watch itself.

The development of improved technology in watches - and the subsequent increase in price of bulky sports watches - has led to them becoming increasingly prestigious. Companies like Rolex and TAG Heuer specialise in the production of rugged watches for aviation and sports use. Due to the fact that mechanical precision is often held in the same regard as style, these watches have achieved a reputation as being top quality.

Recently, the market for costume watches and cheaper sports watches has grown considerably. This has led to the development of cheaply made watches that are that cannot be repaired should they break. These watches retail for much less than their higher end counterparts - which, in most cases, can be repaired if they stop working - but still provide plenty of style for the user on a tight budget.

Analogue or Digital?

Analogue watches are timeless and classy. The analogue watch has seen a resurgence in the past few years as the digital watch boom has begun to die down. The majority of top watch manufacturers design analogue watches, and the high-end products will almost always have analogue displays.

Digital watches, on the other hand, became popular quite recently. The boom of liquid crystal displays in the 1980s meant that, for a while, digital watches were extremely popular, and the height of cool was to have a watch that sported a calculator as well. Whilst digital watches are now usually inexpensive and cheaply made, they do appeal to younger people and are useful for learning how to tell the time. In addition, some high-end digital watches simulate analogue hands in a liquid crystal display. This effect can be very appealing and is certainly a break from the chunky single font digital watches of times gone by.

Battery, Quartz or Mechanical?

Watches traditionally used mechanical moving parts to keep the time. However, due to the size of the parts used, it is frequently the case that this type of watch will be off by as much as several seconds per day. This is unacceptable for many people. However, the sheer beauty of the workings of a mechanical watch will convert many to their use. Skeleton watches play on this fact by utilising a see-through case, which allows the owner to marvel at the mechanical precision. It is for this reason that mechanically powered watches remain popular, in spite of being significantly less accurate than their battery powered and quartz cousins.

Quartz watches were developed by Epsom, a subsidiary of Seiko. By the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, quartz watches were fully functional and were used primarily for timing the various Olympic events. Seiko only patented a certain part of the quartz watch, meaning they freely allowed other manufacturers to benefit from their research and development efforts.

A quartz watch runs by applying pressure to a tiny quartz crystal, which causes it to vibrate at a constant and highly rigid rate. This vibration is then used to provide highly stable and accurate timekeeping. Quartz watches require a battery to keep the piezoelectric effect vibrating the quartz crystal operating accurately. This battery will normally last for a couple of years and is fairly easy to replace. A watch battery can typically cost around £5, although recently they have been available at an even cheaper cost.

Modern and high-tech watches can offer additional features like radio synchronisation. This technology means that the watch will synchronise itself via a radio signal to an atomic clock, which means that it will never be fast or slow, and won't require the user to make any changes to the time displayed. Some other watches, specifically sports watches, use a kinetic energy recovery system to power the watch and keep it operating accurately. This means that just by moving around the battery in the watch is charged, with the wrist effectively working as a generator to produce power. This type of technology probably won't save much money in the long run, but it is very interesting and appeals to a large number of buyers.

Insurance

Insuring a watch can be done in a number of ways. Typically a watch will be covered under home contents insurance whilst it is in the home. However, a watch might have to be specified as being particularly valuable if it is worth over a certain amount - usually £1000 or more.

Speak to your contents insurance provider about including your watch on your contents policy when away from home. This usually carries a £50 or £100 excess, so be careful when specifying a watch that costs around this amount - if you lose it, you won't get anything back. A specified item is usually just listed by make or model, but for particularly high value items, a serial number or identification number is useful to list, easing the claims process. The value of a specified item is determined by price only, so make sure you put a reasonable and indicative value on it.

Watches can also be covered by standalone insurance policies if there isn't the option to cover it under home contents insurance. Getting a watch covered in a standalone policy is typically more expensive, as there is only one item of risk, meaning that the insurance company in question isn't able to offset the risk of the watch being damaged or lost with other risks.
