Something flowing: to go dancing
When buying a dress for a dance
party, the most important aspect to be considered is comfort. Your attire must enable you to move freely and your shoes must be comfortable. So away with pointed heels and sheath dresses!For such occasions, go for flowing dresses with thin straps or a nice halter neck. Avoid long cuts which may not be comfortable for dancing. As for footwear, indulge yourself with wedge sandals or boot heeled pumps, which are much more stable than pencil heels.
The short Coco cocktail dress
If it is an inauguration, an opening or a night out, go for something short. Cocktail dresses are always worn above the knee and can even pass off as day dresses. They come in a range of cuts. Strapless dresses, flounce dresses embroidered with sequins...nothing is too much.
It is preferable to wear high, pointed heels or rock and roll boots or even high-heeled sandals that are very much in vogue these days.
A princess dress for the opera
Enjoy yourself on the rare occasions when you can dress up like film stars! A formal party, an opera or a ballet, a preview-show or even an award ceremony are events to sparkle in a princess dress of unmatched elegance. Try sheath dresses and peep toes (with open ends) or the strapless contrast dress with a short front and a long flowing back. Those with slender figures can afford to fall for a draped dress teamed with high-heeled strap sandals.
Colourful elegance for weddings
If you are invited to a wedding, the old school recommends a suit and a hat. But there are other options depending on your age and the type of wedding, whether it is to take place during the day, at the countryside or by the sea, in the halls of a big hotel or in the village function hall. Never try to compete with the bride by wearing a long white dress, for she will never forgive you for it. You have a wide range to choose from, from volatile spring dresses with sandals, mid-length single shoulder dress with T-strap metal shoes, a short tunic with high heeled strap sandals revealing your ancient goddess-like looks...to pastel coloured pant suits with printed pumps for a touch of fantasy and you will be ready for the wedding!
Simple and charming for religious ceremonies
When it comes to religious occasions such as christenings, Bar Mitzvah etc., restraint is required. Remember that arms must always be covered and sometimes even the head. Stoles and shawls could prove to be quite useful. You could even use the occasion to go in for unusual headgear like a silk scarf or a Mantilla veil or a delicate hat.
Knee-length dresses with a belt, skirt suits in neutral colours with ballerinas or moccasins for the feet are perfectly elegant options.

Matt or satin? The fabric to bring you out
There is a wide range of textures, from light silk or organza, to sheers like chiffons or more structured fabrics such as
smooth velvet, taffetas or silk Mikado. These fabrics range from fine satin to bright Hollywood and subdued matt. Not to mention fabrics with rich work such as brocades, lace, embroidery, sequins, inlaid with precious stones or small crystals and feathers.Go for natural materials and avoid cheap synthetic fabrics that do not absorb perspiration. It is better to be sure of yourself for important occasions.
Handling with delicacy: Washing and ironing
First, carefully read the washing instructions on the fabric. You cannot wash your beautiful dress in a machine at 90o.
For delicate dresses like these, hand wash or dry wash is recommended.
Ironing with a warm iron, with a piece of cloth over the fabric, or steam ironing is recommended. But generally it is advisable to give it to the dry cleaner’s in order to maintain your small (or big) investment.
One-shoulder vs backless: The cut
Today, being elegant does not necessarily mean wearing a dress with a train. The options are open: from short (to very short for long legs) or very long and even knee-length which is equally stylish, one can go for anything.
Options are infinite in the world of dresses. There are empire waist dresses, a flattering cut to fluff up tiny waists, balloon dresses, strapless dresses which are always very feminine, the very much in vogue one-shoulder which appears in all the current collections, dresses with low-cut backs, flounce dresses, dresses with slits (long, short, at the back)...

Pastel shades (lavender, lilac, old rose, apple green, peach, flesh-coloured) and earthy colours like (sand, ochre, honey, chocolate, coffee) show you at your best and enhance your complexion. They can be ideal for women who love suits. For ready-to-wear clothes, you can only refer to the sizes of branded clothes. They can vary even though there is an effort towards European standardisation. Generally, fashion houses begin at size 36 and end at 42. But exclusive stores focus on sizes that are hard to find in regular stores.
