Contract ties you into using the same network and same phone, if you do not want to have to pay extra, for 12 to 24 months, but better mobile phones are available to you for less and the cost of calls, texts and data downloads is lower. It is worth speaking to an expert, to see who offers the plan that fits your habits and offers the mobile phone you decide you want.

Smartphones like the Apple iPhone are much more than just mobile phones, but the majority of users still prefer more basic models, which cost less, and cover the basics perfectly well. Smartphones

The shelves of retailers are increasingly stocked with things that are more like handheld computers than basic mobile phones. Like computers, smartphones run on operating systems (OS) which means applications, or apps, can be developed and installed, and mobile phones can be used for a huge variety of purposes, from spirit levels to portable gaming devices.

Smartphones offer great internet access, thousands of apps, beautiful screens, and the ability to stay in touch by phone, text, email, social networking, picture and, often, video messaging. And they are cool. If that is important to you then look out for Apple, Blackberry and HTC as well as brands like Nokia, Samsung and Sony. If you just want to call and text, stick to the cheaper, standard mobile phones.

Not all smartphones are the same. They have different operating systems supporting different apps, screen size and their qualities differ: some have keypads, some are touchscreen, some are better for internet browsing. Find out what apps are available on different platforms.

Operating systems

The most common OS is Google's Android, which is used on mobile phones like the Samsung Galaxy S. There are over 100,000 apps available on these mobile phones, meaning there is a wide selection of serious apps as well as entertaining ones. Google developed it so internet browsing is excellent.

Apple's iOS runs the iPhone 3, 3GS and 4 mobile phones, and has the most apps - around a quarter of a million. Apple test all apps before allowing them on their phones, so quality is excellent, as is browsing, and the latest updates are available to users of all iPhones as soon as they are ready, while Android users have to wait for their mobile phone manufacturer and service provider to roll out updates.

Blackberry released OS 6 to combat Android and iOS' popularity. As you would expect from the brand providing mobile phones for the professional market, the focus remains on business apps and messaging and there is not a huge amount developed independently, meaning there is not the same incredible choice as with the other two, though the OS has been generally well received.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is impressively responsive and provides excellent internet, email and typing, though Microsoft has been criticised for not allowing multitasking – running more than one app at a time – though they are sorting this. Nokia's mobile phones will soon be run on Microsoft's OS.

Other features

Even though manufacturers are trying to improve their touchscreen technology, heavy texters or emailers might prefer a smartphone or standard mobile phone with a keypad. Opting for a mobile phone with a keypad on the front, means less screen. Slide-out keypads give you both, but mobile phones with this feature will be bulkier.

If typing isn't that important then the ability to scroll and zoom with the flick of a finger makes touchscreens attractive. The quality of a touchscreen varies with the make and model of the phone. It is always worth going to the Carphone Warehouse or another retailer to see if you can try the phone out for yourself. Make sure you are buying a product that will not infuriate you by being unresponsive or by having icons or keys that are too small.

If you want to take snaps on the go without having to carry a camera then a good quality camera phone is ideal. However more megapixels doesn't necessarily mean better images. Look out for the size of the image sensor (Nokia's N8 is the biggest at the moment), a flash (again the N8 is top drawer) and manual controls for white balance and ISO. As with all these features, a trip to a phone shop to try for yourself is a great idea.

The more your phone can do, the bigger the strain will be on the battery; this is especially true of phones with large, bright screens. You can adjust screen brightness to counter this but the truth is that if battery life is an overriding concern you may be better served by going for a basic mobile phone like the Samsung E2230.
